Serial rapist and formed Met Police officer, David Carrick, has been found guilty of abusing a 12-year-old girl and raping a former partner in a pattern of “horrific” offending dating back 35 years.
Carrick admitted to abusing the 12-year-old in a note that went undiscovered for 35 years.
In the note, dated 29 August, 1990, Carrick admitted to abusing the 12-year-old girl for 18 months before the victim told her mother.
Carrick, who was also a teen at the time, confessed to the abuse in the letter alongside his medical records signed “Dave”.
Over 20 years later, Carrick repeatedly raped a woman and subjected her to “degrading and humiliating” abuse.
Carrick, 50, is already serving a minimum term of 32 years in prison, having admitted 71 offences of sexual violence committed over a 17-year period against 12 women. He admitted to the offences in 2022 and 2023.
He was originally arrested at his home in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in October 2021.
The jury deliberated for five hours on the new allegations before finding him unanimously guilty at the Old Bailey on Wednesday – he will be sentenced on Thursday.
The charges
Five counts of indecent assault against a girl under 16 between April 1989 and August 1990 Two counts of rape against a woman, once between December 2014 and April 2016 then between January and December 2019 Sexual assault against the same woman between January and December 2019 Coercive and controlling behaviour in relation to the same woman between 2016 and 2019The written confession
In the note in 1990, Carrick wrote that the girl was “not crazy” and that it was “true”.
Carrick wrote: “I know how (the girl) must feel. That’s why I stopped and promised I would never go near her again and I have kept that promise and I always will.”
He offered to go away and never be seen again, adding: “Sorry to you and especially sorry to (the girl) but she does not have to worry ever again. Please do not try to talk about it.”
Carrick had written the letter after the girl told her mother what was going on, but no further action was taken and the matter was “brushed under the carpet”, according to the victim.
A ‘traumatising’ relationship
The court also heard how the woman had been repeatedly raped by Carrick.
The second victim met Carrick through a dating website and was aware from the start he was a police officer.
She said he was “charming, witty, sarcastic” and acted like “everyone’s best friend”.
A police interview with the woman played at the Old Bailey, described how Carrick strangled her, called her abusive names and kicked her out of the house.
The victim said the relationship had been “quite traumatising – I wish I’d never met him”.
She added that Carrick had “ruined” her life and tainted her views on sex and relationships.
Carrick claimed during an interview at Full Sutton prison that the sex had been consensual and said the victim had been motivated by the MeToo movement.
A different future had his offending been picked up in 1990
Superintendent Iain Moor, who led the Hertfordshire Police investigation said: “It’s very difficult to apply today’s standards back to the 1990s. Obviously, we have multi-agency safeguarding hubs now.
“We have mechanisms for reports to come in from GPs, from medical professionals.
“But, I think had something occurred and the police became aware back in 1990, then it is possible that the offending could have been picked up at that point and then the future looks very different.
“It’s difficult to say exactly what that path would be, but I’m sure it’d be different to the one that we have today.”
Lawyer Shilpa Shah, who authorised charges and led both prosecutions by the Crown Prosecution Service against David Carrick, said: “It was clear from the compelling testimonies given by these women that they had endured relentless abuse to which they did not consent.

“One victim was a child when she was indecently assaulted by David Carrick, and another was sexually abused by him while he served as a senior police officer.
“These factors made it vital to prosecute him a second time – not only because of the severity of the crimes and the public interest arising from him being a police officer when he committed some of them, but also to show the full extent of his offending which spanned decades.
“By bringing this case to court, we ensured the victims’ voices were heard and their experiences were formally acknowledged. We hope today’s convictions provide them with a sense of justice and will help them move forward with their lives.”
