When it comes to the rock genre, rockers like KISS, Guns N' Roses, and even Bon Jovi are still holding strong. Doc McGhee, Bon Jovi's former manager, reveals the rockstar wouldn't be topping the charts if he were to start in today's music business.
As KISS's current manager, McGhee spoke at a Q&A session during the Kiss Kruise: Land-Locked in Las Vegas event over the weekend. He believes the way the current music business is set up will cause many to miss out on future greats.
"I think Motley Crue would have happened because of how infectious that was, and how kids connected," he explained, according to Ultimateclassicrock.
"I don't believe Bon Jovi would have made it, because it took too long for us to get to [the band's 1986 commercial breakthrough and third album] Slippery When Wet," he added.
McGhee managed the rocker for about seven years, from 1984 to 1991, and managed hit rock bands like Motley Crue, Skid Row, Hootie & th Blowfish, and Guns N' Roses for a short period.
He goes on to add that back in the day, artists would sign multiple record deals and are now signing a single deal with thousands of other songs going up on Spotify. The band manager says corporate greed has ruined things.
"So the new kids that come in will say I can't make money touring, it's too expensive. I can't get on Spotify. I can't get on anything because there's too much clutter, too much information out there. So what we're going to do is lose the next Bob Dylan, the next Motley Crues, the next AC/DCs, the next Led Zeppelins, because they're going to say 'I can't make money doing this, so I gotta go work for my Dad,'" he explained.
Among rising artists, McGhee shares his hopes for British rocker Yungblud, who has captured the interest of multiple legends in the genre.
For now, Bon Jovi isn't going anywhere, having announced his 2026 tour, Forever Young.
