Baltimore Ravens, Orioles Stadium DJ, 59, Heads to Hospice Care Amid Cancer Battle: ‘I’m Not Giving Up’

Bob Popik, the man who played the hits at Baltimore Ravens and Orioles home games for more than a decade, is moving to a hospice care facility on Wednesday, Nov. 19 amid his battle with advanced pancreatic cancer.

Popik, 59, announced the move on his Facebook account, where he’s been posting photos of his family and friends who have visited him during his hospital stay.

The visits have helped Popik cope with his plight, he said over Facebook messenger. “Music also has been therapeutic,” he wrote, noting that he was listening to the song “No Easy Street” by the Psychedelic Furs as he typed that message.

After launching his own Wheel Entertainment DJ Services in 1993, Popik joined the Baltimore Orioles as music director/audio operation in March 2000 and was with the baseball club for more than two decades before leaving the organization in May 2025.

In 2010, he landed a similar role as gameday DJ for the Baltimore Ravens, playing music during the team’s home games at M&T Bank Stadium until he was hospitalized on Oct. 21. His last game for the Ravens was on Monday night, Sept. 22, against the Detroit Lions. He’s also DJed games for Navy football since 2011.

Though he might not be physically able to make it to the stadium, Popik has tentative plans to help pick the hits for a future Ravens game. “I plan to do more. My two bosses have reached out and want to do a music meeting with me,” he said during a phone interview with Parade.

Full disclosure, I’m Facebook friends with Popik. We met through the Rockin’ the Suburbs podcast, but we haven’t met in person. However, we do occasionally exchange messages and are both fans of the Smiths. I quoted him in an article for AARP the Magazine marking the 50th anniversary of punk rock and how bands like the Ramones who got their start in New York punk club CBGB’s are now played at sporting events in stadiums.

Like many men his age, Popik admitted that he’s avoided doctors for much of his life, believing that if he felt OK, he was healthy. “I’ve lived sort of in denial and then all that came crashing down on Oct. 21 when I brought myself to the hospital,” he said.

Popik fell on his back on Oct. 11 and thought he’d recover, like he had from previous injuries playing basketball. “I figured I just needed some ibuprofen and rest, and I’ll be back in a week or two but it went on for a week and half and it wasn’t getting any better, so I realized I needed to go to the doctor.”

Once at the hospital, a CAT scan revealed what doctors initially thought was pancreatitis, he said. An MRI later revealed cancer on his pancreas, liver and spine.

Despite the diagnosis, Popik remains optimistic.

“You can tell it in my voice I'm not down; I'm not depressed, I'm not overwhelmed thinking about what I have,” he said. “I've been given six to nine months to live, and I take it in stride, and I am going to fight until every breath is out of my body. I'm not giving up, and I'm remaining positive. I believe that you need to remain positive to beat this. And that's what I continue to do.”

His family and friends have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for Popik and his family “as they navigate his care, and ongoing pain management,” noting the “financial burden has become overwhelming” as “many of the treatments, medications, and supportive care services he needs are not fully covered by insurance.”
