Zach Bryan has been at the center of more than a few controversies this year, but his latest message isn’t about drama. The 29-year-old country singer revealed he’s been sober for nearly two months, calling the change one of the most important steps he’s ever taken.
Taking to Instagram, Bryan said a 20-day solo motorcycle trip across the country pushed him to confront the reality that he “really need[s] some f****** help.”
He explained that years of pressure, from a decade in the U.S. Navy to being thrust into sudden fame, had taken a toll he didn’t recognize at first. “I hadn’t fully comprehended the scope of, had some subconscious effects on me as a person,” he wrote on Tuesday, November 18.
The “Pink Skies” singer shared that he had been living with a sense of “perpetual discontent,” and that alcohol became a way to fill “a consistent black hole.”
Public scrutiny added another layer of stress. He described being “lied about and doxxed on the internet,” all while touring and helping two friends through medical issues. The pressure left him experiencing “earth-shattering panic attacks.”
“The anxiety I felt was paralyzing and I thought since I was successful, had the money I always longed for, and had great friends, that I could tough anything out,” he wrote.
He started working with a therapist to understand his “toxic relationship with booze” and learn healthier ways to cope with major life changes. Bryan hasn’t “touched” alcohol in nearly two months, choosing sobriety to regain “personal clarity.”
“I needed to see the world objectively. My family supported every step I took. Conversations about the future, kids one day, my health and Sammy’s happiness made me prioritize not only myself, but my entire family,” he added, mentioning his new girlfriend, Samantha Leonard.
Bryan now says he feels “great,” “content” and “whole.” And he encouraged anyone struggling, especially those who pride themselves on toughness, to not be afraid of seeking help.
“If you or any of your friends are too tough, too scared or too stubborn to reach out, know that the most stubborn dumb*** on the planet did and didn’t,” he wrote. He added that he doesn’t believe in absolutes, but he hopes his openness “helps somebody.”
Support poured in from fans, who filled the comments with encouragement. “We love you man. You have gotten a lot of us through tough times and we could never be more grateful,” one wrote.
Another added, “You are saving lives with this post. Thank you. From a psychiatrist, and a big fan,” while a third wrote, “In tears (of joy!) So incredibly proud of you. Thank you for sharing your journey and inspiring many others who may be struggling.”
A fourth added, "It takes a strong man to ask for help. Congrats on that! Wishing you the very best on your journey.”
Bryan’s latest update comes after he found himself under intense public scrutiny. In 2024, Bryan split from podcaster Brianna “Chickenfry” LaPaglia, who later accused him of being emotionally abusive. More recently, footage surfaced of him scaling a fence and attempting to confront country musician Gavin Adcock.
In better news, Bryan also broke records this year, drawing 112,408 people to his Michigan Stadium show — the biggest ticketed concert ever held in the U.S.
