Stunning ‘DWTS’ Elimination Prompts Fans to Demand The Return of Judges Save

A stunning Dancing With the Stars semifinals elimination has fans calling for the return of the Judges Save, the one element they believe helped level the playing field for contestants.

In a shocking turn of events, reality star Whitney Leavitt and her pro partner Mark Ballas were eliminated just one week short of the Season 34 finale. Even with strong performances of the cha cha and Viennese waltz, where they earned 58 cumulative points, the dance partners ended their ballroom run during the Prince-themed semifinals episode.

Viewers expressed their shock by taking to the series' Instagram and voicing their displeasure. Many argued the outcome made no sense given the pair’s high scores and memorable performances.

Some even suggested the series' voting system needs to be reconsidered after such an unexpected result. They called for the return of the Judges Save, a voting element introduced in Season 28.

With the Judges’ Save, Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, and Bruno Tonioli could rescue one of the bottom two couples from elimination, and the head judge cast the deciding vote if needed. The rule was introduced after Bobby Bones’ Season 27 victory to help prevent strong dancers from being eliminated due to popularity gaps. Bones ultimately took home the Mirrorball trophy that season despite consistently earning lower scores than many of his fellow contestants.

However, in 2024, DWTS executive producer Deena Katz told TV Line that voting should be "about America," and that's why the rule was eliminated by Season 32. "And at the end of the day, the judges' save sometimes isn't what America wanted. And [eliminations are based on] half the judges and half America voting, and so that's kind of the reason we did it."

But, with Leavitt and Ballas' surprise elimination, fans are calling for the rule to be reinstated. They took to Instagram to share their frustration.

"If votes are gonna be 50/50 fan and judges, then bring back Judges Save because the fans do not know what they’re talking about. Unfair elimination," wrote one viewer.

"Fix the voting system, bring back the Judge's Save. At least it appeared to be a fair elimination," penned a second Instagram user. A third viewer claimed, "I wish this show was more about actual talent and not a popularity contest."

The Season 34 finale of Dancing With the Stars airs Tuesday, November 25, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and Disney+. The series airs the next day on Hulu.
