Mark Ballas & Whitney Leavitt Reveal ‘Gut Feelings’ About ‘DWTS’ Fate Amid ‘Mormon Wives’ Drama

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Season 34 Week 10.

Mark Ballas and Whitney Leavitt opened up about their elimination from Dancing with the Stars one week shy of the Season 34 finale.

In a post-show interview with Good Morning America, the pro dancer and the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star admitted they struggled weekly with their fate on the celebrity ballroom competition. But they weren’t totally shocked that this was the week they were sent home. “I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t even think I’d make it this far,” Leavitt told the outlet.

Ballas added, “Every week she’s like, ‘We’re gonna make it.’” While he said he usually assured her she was “gonna make it,” the ballroom pro admitted, “I think we both had a …sometimes you just get gut feelings, you know?”

“But I was really proud of both dances tonight,” Ballas added of the couple’s Prince Night Cha Cha to “1999” and Viennese Waltz to “Slow Love.”

“And we’ve had a great time and had some really fun moments on this show. And that’s what it’s all about,” he continued. “And yes, it sucks to fall at the last hurdle, but you have a stacked finale. Great couples. It’s gonna be an amazing show next week. And I made a friend for life. It’s not the end, you know? But this happens sometimes. It’s okay.”

The live TV elimination came after Dancing With the Stars host Julianne Hough asked Leavitt directly about comments she made about only returning to The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives to get to Dancing With the Stars.

“After two seasons of [SLOMW], I wanted to take a break, but once I found out this [DWTS] would be an opportunity for all of the girls to be able to go after this, I wanted to take that chance,” Leavitt told Hough. “I will forever be so grateful for [DWTS casting director] Deena Katz because this changed my life and I couldn’t be more grateful.”

In the third season of Mormon Wives, released on Nov. 13, Leavitt didn’t turn up until Episode 5. She explained her return to the show with, “I just found out if I came back to film, I can audition for Dancing With the Stars.”

In a confessional, she insisted that she never technically quit MomTok, the Utah friend group’s TikTok community that the show is based on.

“After last season, I did decide to step away from the show, but I never quit MomTok,” Leavitt said. “I was always in MomTok, still a part of that group. I just really needed a break, but then I heard from my team Dancing with the Stars was going to cast someone from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, and that’s a motivator. I'll come back for that.”

Leavitt and co-star Jennifer Affleck were ultimately selected to compete in the ABC dance-off. Affleck was eliminated in Week 7 alongside pro partner Jan Ravnik.
