Andy Richter Says Dancing With the Stars Fulfills a Need Adults Rarely Get Anymore

In a conversation that lasted more than an hour, Emma Slater and Andy Richter looked back fondly on their Dancing With the Stars journey. One of the things the duo unpacked was the basic human need the DWTS experience fulfills for celebrities like Richter — and it goes pack to early human civilization.

"An aspect of this show that struck me early on which is I had been in plenty of creative partnerships, but we did not hold on to each other for four hours a day," Richter, 59, joked on The Three Questions With Andy Richter podcast.

Dubbed "The People's Princess," Richter brought joy to thousands of viewers whenever he hit the dance floor each week. Even his week nine elimination was a joyous occasion, with fans simply being proud of how far he'd come. But for Richter, the entire experience filled what he called a "basic human" need that he didn't know was missing.

"Touch is a basic human nourishment," he continued. "And I think it's a key to why [celebrities] are so touched by [the experience]. You're getting stuff you got when you were a baby."

Throughout his career, the comedian has worked in many partnerships to get the job done. But none of those partnerships have been quite like the one he had on Dancing With the Stars.

Richter said having that much physical touch as an adult while working in a professional setting was quite an experience. Slater, 36, couldn't agree more.

She pointed out how the need for physical touch was one of our most basic and primal needs. The DWTS pro also said people used to dance way more often, whether it was to celebrate or it simply felt good to move their body.

Once you get a taste of that aspect of human connection as an adult, it's something you want more of. Richter said he would often go home after practice and embrace his wife, Jennifer Herrera, to keep the good vibes going.
