    Women’s Recap

Liseska Gallegos Gutierrez started the meet off strong for Southern Illinois with a win in the women’s 200 backstroke, touching in 1:57.69 to win by more than a second over teammate Brooklyn Anderson. Her season best stands at 1:57.25 from SIU’s meet with Northwestern and Miami (OH) at the beginning of October. The Salukis also finished 3rd with Andrea Santos Arambula touching in 2:01.11

Susana Gabriela Hernandez Barradas swam a season best 49.66 in the women’s 100 free to take the win by a little more than a tenth over SIU teammate Zaria Terry‘s 49.81. SIU also picked up 3rd in the event with Masha Zhukova‘s 51.17 and 4th with Ava Rines‘s 51.72.

Olivia Herron won the women’s 200 breaststroke in 2:09.09, a new season best time for her, and the 9th fastest time in the country so far this season. Herron’s best stands at the 2:08.39 she swam to qualify 14th for the final at last year’s NCAA Championships.

The final event of the meet is the only swimming event that the Southern Illinois women did not win over all three days. The Nebraska–Omaha ‘A’ 400 free relay team of Kate Novinski (53.83), Julia Thomas (50.29), Kira Jacobs (51.83), and Leah Spencer (51.02) swam 3:26.97 to win their first gold medal of the meet.

The morning session saw Hungarian freshman Livia Mukacsi-Nagy win the women’s mile in 16:58.00 for her first ever time swimming the event.

    Men’s Recap

Just like on the women’s side, the men’s final day started with an event win from Southern Illinois. Sophomore Juraj Barcot swam 1:45.94 in the men’s 200 backstroke. This was a new personal best time for him, dropping from the 1:46.94 he swam at last year’s Missouri Valley Championships.
