Report says Sam Leavitt planning to transfer from ASU, agent says decision not made

Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt is “doubtful” to return to the program next season as his camp is shopping the redshirt sophomore to other big programs, according to reporting from On3.

On3’s Steve Wiltfong and Pete Nakos have learned that the camp of Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt is actively shopping the talented passer “at a high level” to other programs with the plan of entering the Transfer Portal when the window opens on Jan. 2.

Leavitt’s agent and brother, Dallin, posted on his Instagram story a text conversation saying Leavitt has not made a decision yet.

Leavitt has spent the past two seasons at ASU playing for head coach Kenny Dillingham and alongside star wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. He last played on Oct. 25 before undergoing season-ending surgery to address a foot injury.

The 2024 Big 12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year opted to stay in Tempe after the Sun Devils’ run to the College Football Playoff last year, entering 2025 as a dark horse Heisman candidate and potential first-round NFL Draft pick.

In seven games, Leavitt has thrown for 1,628 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions with 300 rushing yards and five touchdown runs. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. ranked Leavitt seventh among quarterbacks for the 2026 NFL Draft, perhaps not high enough to forgo another season of college football.

Last week, Arizona State athletic director Graham Rossini told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo he was not concerned with ASU’s ability to support Leavitt through NIL.

“We think (Leavitt has) got more in the tank here as a Sun Devil,” Rossini said. “He’s got the opportunity to play at the next level. They’ve got to make the right decision for his family.”

Dillingham told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta he was not as confident that the program had the ability to go get or keep anyone he wanted. The head coach back tracked on Saturday after a win over West Virginia.

“I have a lot of confidence that our administration is pushing the chips to the table on winning in football here,” Dillingham told reporters after meeting with university representatives. “They’re behind winning games and I can say with a lot of confidence that they’re going to support this place at a level that can win and compete in the Big 12.”

Leavitt has one of the highest NIL valuations in the country at $3.1 million.

Last January, he helped ASU’s offensive line land a deal with Arby’s, and in December 2024 he committed to give back 100% of his royalties from merchandise sales back to the Sun Angel Collective.
