70s Legendary Rocker, 77, Reveals Which Led Zeppelin Song Reminds Him Most of John Bonham

There's no denying Robert Plant, 77, has led a blessed life. The man fronted the greatest band in rock and roll history with groundbreaking vocals, wrote lyrics like a poet, and did it all with the most beautiful head of hair I've ever seen. But that doesn't mean every part of Plant's life has been charmed; in fact, the prolific artist has endured truly tragic moments.

During what was supposed to be a triumphant American tour in 1977, Plant lost his five-year-old son Karac to a sudden stomach infection. According to Ultimate Classic Rock, Plant received a call that his boy was ill and before he could make arrangements to get home, Karac had tragically died. At the time, Plant also had an eight-year-old daughter, Carmen. The band put the tour on hold but remained supportive of him during that horrendous time — and in particular, late drummer John Bonham was a great comfort.

In a 2013 interview, Plant recalled just how supportive he was.

"During the absolute darkest times of my life when I lost my boy and my family was in disarray, it was Bonzo who came to me. The other guys were from the South of England and didn’t have the same type of social etiquette that we have up here in the North that could actually bridge that uncomfortable chasm with all the sensitivities required ... to console."

Just three years later, Plant would lose Bonham too — an immeasurable loss, especially after having him at his side during the worst period of his life. The two, along with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, had done something remarkable together, so it’s only natural that there would be a specific song and moment that reminds Plant of his late friend. According to Clash magazine, Plant once told Vulture that the song that reminds him most of Bonham is the 10-minute epic “Achilles Last Stand,” which showcased Bonham’s masterful power at the kit.

"Ironically, we go back to ‘Achilles Last Stand,’ which is probably what I’d first say. I could say ‘When the Levee Breaks.’ It was an absolutely stunning recording," Plant said. "John is playing such a sexy, ridiculously laid-back and held-back groove — he bought us a lot of credits when sometimes we were the guys at the front of the band and behaving a little coquettish. But I keep thinking of him playing on ‘Achilles Last Stand.’"

He continued: "You just needed to listen to what those three guys were doing in the studio. Listen to Jonesy with the eight-string Alembic bass. And Jimmy’s solo? It’s just really, really something."

While it is beyond heartbreaking to lose as much as Plant has lost, it is a comfort to know that parts of those he loved will outlive even him through the stunning musical impact they left behind.
