A gray, drizzly Tuesday that began with a broken internet? I knew this Tuesday was going to feel Mondayish, but I didn’t know *THAT* is how it would start. How wretched would this week feel had the Bears lost on Sunday?
Something from my notes that I wish I would have mentioned on Episode No. 9 of The BN Bears Podcast: “My biggest takeway might be that J.J. McCarthy, for 58 minutes, didn’t look like he belonged on a football field as an NFL starter.” That thought encapsulates why it was so frustrting to see him drive down for a score to take the lead. McCarthy might have moxie, intangibles, and other things that the Vikings liked enough to use a first-round pick to take him. But watching his decision-making and arm talent leaves a lot to be desired. Thankfully, Devin Duvernay and Cairo Santos were able to deliver victory when defeat felt certain. You can check out the newest episode of The BN Bears Podcast embedded below: More from my notes: J.J. McCarthy played so poorly on Sunday that I think he needs a number change because he is doing a disservice to the No. 9. As a Chicago sports fan, No. 9 holds a soft spot in my heart. Michael Jordan wore it during the Olympics. Jim McMahon wore it as a Super Bowl XX champion. Minnie Miñoso wore it as a White Sox legend. Javier Báez wore it as a 2016 NLCS MVP and Cubs World Series champion. Jaquan Brisker wears it well now. At this rate, McCarthy is going to ruin the lore that No. 9 has — so he should change the number before he completely kills the vibe. I like how the Bears used their tight ends on Sunday. Cole Kmet did a tremendous job as the safety valve option for quarterback Caleb Williams. Kmet had some angry runs that brought joy to my heart. Using Kmet in the flat and as a security blanket allows Chicago to use Colston Loveland more in the middle of field. Getting Loveland downfield and in space allows him to make use of his wide catch radius and his run-after-the-catch abilities. More of that, please. Mandatory Credit: Brad Rempel-Imagn Images The most discouraging thing from rewatching the Bears-Vikings Week 11 game is that the defense came up with no sacks. That group was able to pick up some pressures and QB hits, but that game-changing sack eluded them all afternoon. Had they lost the game, I’d point to the inability to sack McCarthy as a main reason why. This team won’t get to the 10 wins I think it needs in order to qualify for the postseason if the D can’t bring down the QB. — Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) November 18, 2025 All of a sudden, knowing that Caleb Williams is a Scorpio makes things make sense in my head. A “C” grade for Caleb Williams for his Week 11 performance feels fair. He missed some throws in some moments. In others, his teammates let him down with drops. But in a world where “C’s get degrees” (or in this case, wins), I can live with this outcome and move onto the next week. With Jake Moody off to the Washington Commanders, the Bears have an open spot on the practice squad. All things considered, there are worse ways to use a spot than with a backup kicker. Tuesday and Wednesday seem to be days when we get tryout news from Halas Hall, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for that later today. Free agent kickers currently available include Matt Gay, Dustin Hopkins, Austin Seibert, and Justin Tucker (who I want no part of, but thanks for asking). I’m sure there are others, but the Bears are 7-3 and doing a deep dive on kicker free agents isn’t our best use of time as fans. Bears rookie running back Kyle Monangai played better than his stat line of 12 rushes and 23 yards indicates. Monangai ran hard, gained some gritty yards, and scored Chicago’s only touchdown. Sure, that 1.9 yards per carry average isn’t pretty. But it wasn’t indicative of his contributions. I’m missing Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards more than I could ever have imagined. Noah Sewell is a nice player to throw in the lineup in a pinch for a few plays. But the extended look we’re getting from Sewell has led him to be exposed in coverage, where teams are making it known that he is a liability. This would be a nice play for rookie Ruben Hyppolite II to step in, but he has had his own struggles. I can’t stop thinking about what this defense could look like if and when Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson get back in the swing of things. It could make life interesting for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, a defender with oodles of positional versatility. Oct 19, 2025; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago Bears linebacker T.J. Maybe it was an honest mistake. But the optics aren’t great in the Big Apple, especially with Carter being ringside during WWE’s Monday Night Raw episode at Madison Square Garden. www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47009978/missed-practice-honest-mistake-says-giants-abdul-carterMORE BEARS FROM BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad-Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
