Robert Irwin Challenges His ‘DWTS’ Partner to Earn Honorary Aussie Status

With just two weeks remaining in Dancing With the Stars Season 34, Robert Irwin decided it was the perfect moment to challenge his pro partner, Witney Carson, with the ultimate Aussie test.

Irwin shared a playful video on Instagram, showing the dance partners in their rehearsal room. Between rehearsals for the semifinals, the pair took a moment to enjoy a quick snack considered an Australian national staple.

After having a koala named after her, learning how to wrangle a (stuffed) crocodile, and being awarded her own Australia Zoo khaki shirt, there was one task left for Carson to master during her partnership with Irwin: trying Vegemite. The beloved spread is made of brewers yeast, seasoned with onion, celery, and some salt, according to Food 52.

In the clip, Iwin tells the camera, "Today I am having Witney try an Australian staple, Vegemite." She added, "I have heard horrible things about this," to which he responded, "and some good things from me."

He continued, "This is what all Australians grow up eating. You either love it or you don't."

First, Irwin spread butter on some rice crackers. Then he added a small amount atop the butter for Witney to taste.

"What do you think?" Irwin asked Carson. She responded, "That is the saltiest."

He concluded that he would take a spoonful and just eat it, saying, "It's so good." However, just for trying it, Irwin deemed Carson to be an "honorary Australian."

Social media users shared their thoughts about this fun challenge. One wrote, "Robert is enjoying this too much." A second penned, "It's an acquired taste."

Irwin's mother, Terri Irwin, also weighed in, writing, "It took a bit of determination, but I’m proud to say that I’m a Vegemite fan!" Irwin hails from Oregon and has lived in Australia for almost 35 years.
