Noah Cyrus Almost Died During Routine Tonsillectomy Surgery: I Was Kept Alive by an Oxygen Machine

Noah Cyrus is getting candid about a terrifying experience after a surgery back in 2017 went completely awry.

The 25-year-old singer opened up about going under the knife during an appearance on the Zach Sang Show on Monday (Nov. 17) where she recalled waking up from a tonsillectomy to find out her lung had collapsed.

"In the first attempt of the surgery when they were slipping the tube down my throat to literally keep me alive during surgery, they punctured my lung," Cyrus revealed during the interview.

She continued, "The tube slipped into the wrong side of my throat and it deflated my left lung and I was in the ICU for eight hours, completely being kept alive by an oxygen machine."

Looking back, Cyrus said that her mother Tish Cyrus was at the hospital all alone and it was "really, really scary for her."

"I woke up like, 'My throat hurts! Are my my tonsils out? Like, am I okay?' She was like, 'No, not exactly. Your throat hurts because you've been under for eight hours and you've had that tube in your throat for eight hours,'" she said.

Cyrus added that she had to wait an entire year before doctors would attempt the procedure again because they tried to blame the medical mistake on an asthma attack and wanted her to undergo further testing.

"I went through extra things to like make sure my lungs were okay, going to different doctors, but it really was just a slip of the tube going in...It was a mistake," Cyrus shared.

She admits she was incredibly scared to undergo the surgery again so she put it off for as long as she could. Unfortunately, her tonsil issues continue to flare up, causing her to frequently get sick on the road — and forcing her to cancel shows.

Ultimately, Cyrus decided she needed to undergo the procedure and thankfully, it was a success the second time around.
