ROCHESTER, N.Y. – One week after a massive water main break flooded a neighborhood around Culver Road and Meredith Street, neighbors are still feeling the impacts.
The road has reopened, but homeowners are still working to repair the damage. A city official sent a letter to neighbors saying the mayor and his team are sorry for what they’ve been through and the impact.
Last week, 2 million gallons of water flowed from a broken water main into the neighborhood. News10NBC’s Kristi Blake was there all morning as the water pooled into people’s yards and even heard it trickling into basements. Since then, Kristi has spoken with neighbor Salena Klass on and off about where her recovery stands.
“We’re getting estimates for mold remediation. Structural, like an engineer is going to come by and check on the house,” Klass said. “I told them the timeline and what we need from them, like garbage pickup regularly. So they are having people come out now every day. Everything that we need, they were receptive to taking the information and they’re going to work on a plan to help us.”
Klass says engineers found major damage to their walls. She sent a letter back to the city, telling them the engineers believe the weakened ground will make the house a bigger target for natural flooding in the future.
The deeper inspection is going to run Klass another $1,000. They’ve already spent thousands on a new furnace. The city says it’s working to see how it can help with that inspection.
As of Monday night, there’s still no update about why it took so long to reopen the road. At first, it seemed like a holiday issue, but an official with the city said they’ll investigate the delay a little more. News10NBC will continue to work toward that answer.
