A photo of Dwight Yoakam posing with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, actress Cheryl Hines, backstage at the country star’s Nov. 15 show at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C., is prompting a mixed reaction from fans.
Kennedy, President Donald Trump’s controversial secretary of health and human services, shared the photo, captioned “All the way to Asheville for a night of Hillbilly music with Dwight Yoakam” on X and Instagram.

Photos of Dwight Yoakam with RFK Jr. Prompted a Mixed Reaction
The carousel of photos on Instagram, which included two shots of the trio, as well as one with Yoakam’s opening act Junior Brown, received several positive responses in the comments on that platform.
“Dwight is looking great. ?,” posted professional snake wrangler Bruce Ireland.
“Dwight sings the best version of purple rain ever!” added another.
However, over on X, it was a different story, with several people taking jabs at Kennedy in the comments.
“RFK Jr. posting like he just discovered ‘hillbilly culture’ on a field trip bro acting folksy for the cameras while trying to score relatability points. Feels more like campaign cosplay than a night out,” wrote one person.
“Well that’s disappointing,” another fan wrote.
“Hi Junior. ICYMI while listening to Dwight, Here is what 6 former Surgeon Generals said last night (including Trump's): Secretary Kennedy is entitled to his views. But he is not entitled to put people’s health at risk. He has rejected science, misled the public and compromised the health of Americans. The nation deserves a health and human services secretary who is committed to scientific integrity and can restore morale and trust in our public health agencies. Having served at senior levels in government, we know that politics are complicated. But this is bigger than politics. It’s about putting the health of Americans first,” another person posted.

— Robert F. Kennedy Jr (@RobertKennedyJr) November 16, 2025Not every post was negative, with another person writing, “From politics to pickin' – who knew hillbilly vibes could outshine the Beltway? Dwight's got the hat, you've got the moves! You can bet on it.”
Another came to Yoakam’s defense, writing, “Bro leave Dwight alone. Guitars and Cadillacs, and streets of Bakersfield are classics. Please do not let him be a magamoron.”
Dwight Yoakam Previously Shared His Political Views
In a 1999 interview with The New York Post, Yoakam was asked if he was political. “Yeah, but I don’t like to get into a discussion of it because that’s not what I do. I don’t know if, as a performer, I have the right to impose my political views on other people. My views might not always be that correct,” he said.
“There might be humor in them that could be misinterpreted. Now that I’ve said all that, libertarianism, the pure Jeffersonian ideal to me is appealing. I’m not an active member of the Libertarian Party, but I do think there is room for their concepts in our experiment in democracy. We are responsible for our actions. We should consider taking that road less traveled with less government. I guess I rambled into a pretty big ditch for a guy who didn’t want to talk about politics,” he added.
While the Asheville show was Yoakam’s last scheduled date for 2025, he’s added new dates for 2026 on the Cosmic Roundup & Rodeo Tour beginning Feb. 12 in Lubbock, Texas running through April 12 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
