The good news for Jake Moody is that he is finally getting another chance at being someone’s top kicking option.
But the bad news is that it won’t happen for the Chicago Bears.
The kicker’s time in Chicago has come to an end, as NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reports that the Washington Commanders are signing Jake Moody off the Bears’ practice squad. This move comes after the team dumped kicker Matt Gay:
The Commanders have signed kicker Jake Moody off of the Bears practice squad, per source. Another new kicker for Washington, which cut Matt Gay today.

Happy trails to Jake Moody, who leaves Chicago as the most popular backup kicker in franchise history. And because I can’t think of anyone else off the top of my head who would challenge Moody for that spot, it is his for the taking. During his brief stint with the Bears, Moody made 8 of 9 kicks (88.9 percent success rate) and nailed all three of his extra-point tries. He also became a folk hero of sorts for his game-winning kick against the Commanders on Oct. 13. No wonder Washington was hot for him. If you can’t beat ’em, poach ’em off the practice squad of the team that beat you!
Small samples being what they are, Jake Moody’s time with the Bears was a notable improvement from his time with the 49ers, where he was successful on just 74.2 percent of his kicks. On the one hand, there is a part of me that is happy for Moody because I enjoy a bounce-back story. And it could turn out that Moody’s three-game run in Chicago will help him pen a unique comeback story. But on the other hand, the Bears are losing out on a worthwhile contingency plan at a position that isn’t stable right now.

Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn ImagesThe Bears allowing Jake Moody to sign with the Commanders tells me the following: (1) They are OK with Cairo Santos moving forward, (2) this team wasn’t willing to give Santos the boot (and save some salary cap space in the process) in favor of bringing Moody on board as the team’s full-time kicker, and (3) Santos’ thigh injury isn’t a concern right now (because, if it was, then Chicago could’ve protected Moody from being signed by another team).
In the end, Jake Moody’s departure doesn’t change how I feel about the Bears’ kicking situation. This team still needs to take a look at long-term options in the special teamd department, and that includes the kicking game. Cairo Santos’ job seems safe for now. And it probably feels safer for him after making that game-winning kick in Week 11. But with that being said, Chicago’s front office would be wise to browse the wire and find another kicker who could help in a pinch (and keep Santos on his toes).
