Beloved Folk-Country Artist, 46, Performs Beautiful Rendition of Iconic Rolling Stones Song

The Rolling Stones aren't just cultural icons, they are the culture. So much of their flamboyant style and unapologetic sound is thought of as pioneering, but one thing they are confirmed to be is enduring. One of the best songs in their catalog is the haunting, spiritual tune “Wild Horses.”

The song has been interpreted countless times, but the history behind the lyrics is especially moving. Inspiration hit guitarist Keith Richards during a particularly tumultuous time for the band. Guitarist Brian Jones had just been asked to leave the group and died a month later. The Stones were facing financial trouble, and with Jones gone, they were finally able to legally tour the U.S. again. But Richards had just welcomed his first child, and according to U Discover Music, he was devastated to leave his baby boy behind.

“I knew we were going to have to go to America and start work again, to get me off my ass, and [I didn’t want] to go away,” Keith said, according to the outlet. “It was a very delicate moment; the kid’s only two months old, and you’re goin’ away. Millions of people do it all the time, but still…”

“Wild Horses” has since become a favorite to reinterpret. The Sundays gave it a gorgeous acoustic sheen in the '90s, while Guns N’ Roses elevated it with a soaring electric feel. But Americana folk-country artist Jason Isbell may have delivered one of the most stunning versions yet.

The beloved artist performed it at the opening of the Muscle Shoals exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and fans were blown away.

“What a talent! Beautiful rendition,” praised one fan.

“He needs to do this on tour next year,” added another.

“He’s definitely one of the realest and most raw talented ‘let it fly’ musicians of this era. Singer/songwriter genius,” said another.

Isbell began his career in Drive-By Truckers before going solo in 2007. He has since been regarded as one of the most gut-wrenching writers in modern Americana, weaving heartbreak and beauty into his lyrics. From the devastating “Elephant,” about the emotional toll of cancer on a relationship, to the love song “Cover Me Up,” written about his wife, Isbell’s catalog is widely considered some of the most affecting work in the genre.

He once opened up to Grantland about how difficult it can be to be vulnerable in songwriting — especially when the subject is love rather than darkness.

“It’s not easy,” he admitted. “You don’t look real cool when you’re writing a song like that. It’s hard to keep up a James Dean type of facade if you’re thanking somebody for your salvation. But when you’re writing the kinds of songs that I do, I think your job is to try to be as honest as you possibly can and write about those things that make you uncomfortable sometimes.”
