A joint delegation from the Syrian and Russian defense ministries has conducted a field tour that included several military points and sites in southern Syria.
The visit aimed to review the situation on the ground as part of ongoing cooperation between the two sides, according to a report by the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) on Monday, 17 November.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa (southern Syria) said the delegation set off from the town of Nawa (in Daraa province, southern Syria) toward Quneitra province (southern Syria), passing through the town of al-Malaqa (in rural Quneitra province, southern Syria).
A source from Quneitra province, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said a convoy of about 30 vehicles, believed to be Syrian and Russian, arrived in Quneitra today.
According to the source, the convoy took the western road in Quneitra, a route that is usually almost closed due to the continuous Israeli military presence and surveillance in the area.
It passed through the villages of Beer Ajam, Bariqa, Ruwayhina, Umm al-Azam, al-Qahtaniyah, the al-Alam roundabout, and al-Hamidiyah in rural Quneitra province (southern Syria), areas into which Israeli forces carry out incursions on an almost daily basis.
The vehicles stopped at two locations considered among the most prominent sites that saw Russian deployment under the rule of ousted president Bashar al-Assad, namely the al-Nasiriya area (in rural Quneitra province, southern Syria), which once hosted a Russian base, and the al-Hiran area (in rural Quneitra province, southern Syria), where Russian officers had previously been stationed, the source added.
Hayran included a number of old military companies belonging to the army of the ousted Assad regime, roughly three kilometers from the border line, “without any clear activity taking place.”
The source noted that a state of alert has continued at security checkpoints around the area since the early morning hours.
According to activists from Quneitra province contacted by Enab Baladi, an alert was also observed on the Syrian side, as the Internal Security apparatus set up checkpoints and patrols in multiple towns, carrying out searches and thorough checks at the crossings.
Internal Security erected checkpoints in al-Hiran, Swisah, Naba al-Sakhr, Umm Batnah, Jaba, Khan Arnabeh, the city of Salam (formerly al-Baath city), and al-Koum in Quneitra province (southern Syria), according to the activists.
An Israeli incursion into Jamlah (in western rural Daraa province, southern Syria) took place on the same day, coinciding with the presence of the Syrian and Russian delegations in Quneitra province.
Israeli incursions the same day
Israeli occupation forces also carried out an incursion on Monday into the village of Umm al-Azam in central rural Quneitra, with SANA reporting that a force made up of a tank and four vehicles entered the area and took the road leading to the village of Rasem al-Halabi (in rural Quneitra province, southern Syria).
The area between the village of al-Samadaniyah al-Sharqiyah (in rural Quneitra province, southern Syria) and the town of Khan Arnabeh in rural Quneitra also saw an incursion by the Israeli army, which set up a checkpoint there.
According to SANA, the force erected a military checkpoint on the road linking al-Samadaniyah al-Sharqiyah and Khan Arnabeh after pushing into the area with two four wheel drive vehicles, then withdrew shortly afterward.
A few days earlier, a delegation from the Syrian Ministry of Defense, headed by Brigadier General Banyan Ahmad al-Hariri, commander of the 40th Division, met with the Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), Lieutenant General Anita Asma, and her accompanying delegation.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the meeting discussed ways of enhancing joint cooperation and developing mechanisms for field coordination between the two sides in support of peacekeeping tasks and efforts to consolidate security and stability along the lines of separation.
Previous Russian military points
Russian forces in Syria established eight military points in the disengagement zone along the border between the occupied Syrian Golan and Quneitra province.
In a report published on 9 November 2024, the Russian agency Sputnik said that the point located at the Tel Ahmar site, where the Russian flag was raised, was intended “to protect the area from any potential breaches amid heightened tension in the complex conflict zones in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Israel.”
Alexander Rodionov, deputy commander of Russian forces operating in Syria, said in a press statement to the agency that with the Tel Ahmar point, Russia had opened eight observation points over a period of about two years.
Russia had previously resumed its patrols in southern Syria in early November 2023, after an absence of more than a year, when a Russian military patrol toured southern Quneitra between the town of al-Malaqa and Ghadeer al-Bustan (in rural Quneitra province, southern Syria), near the al-Safra company of the 90th Brigade affiliated with the former regime in the southern part of the province.
