Alison Arngrim has many memories from her years playing Nellie Oleson on Little House on the Prairie, but one moment in particular stands out more than 50 years later—and it involves executive producer Michael Landon.
During an appearance on The Patrick LabyorSheaux podcast, the actress was asked to recall her favorite Michael Landon moment from the show. Arngrim, 63, pointed to a scene from the Season 1 episode “Town Party, Country Party.”
The episode, which first aired on NBC on Oct. 30, 1974, featured a scene where Nellie was pushed down a hill by Laura Ingalls (Melissa Gilbert) while in a wheelchair.
After noting that she had “so many” memorable moments with Landon, Arngrim revealed on the podcast, “Early on, I remember, so I'm in the pond. Well, I'm always in a pond, right? It was ‘Town Party, Country Party,’ and the whole thing where Laura's showing me a crab, and then I just sploosh, sploosh, and covered in goop and terrible stuff.“
“And that was the first pond episode where {Michael] was like totally, he was decorating my head with moss. And that was the whole bizarre one where he had the falling out with the director and literally fired the guy in the middle of the whole thing,” Arngrim continued. “And I'm like sitting there going, ‘But, but, but, but,’ and he turns goes, ‘What are you looking at?’ I'm like, ‘Nothing at all!'”
Arngrim revealed that Landon ordered her to “get back in the water."
“But when we were in the pond, when I went down the hill in the wheelchair again, he insisted on making sure I had more slime on my head and began decorating my head," she said. "And I'm... ‘Why is the water always so dirty?’ And I'm in this completely filthy water. And he says, ‘Do you have a swimming pool at your house?’ And I said, ‘No, actually I don't.’ And he said, ‘Well, after this you can swim in your toilet!’"
“And that was very accurate,” Arngrim concluded. “I spent a lot of time in the water with Michael. A lot of time sitting like waist deep in water having these conversations.”

The episode featured future Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kim Richards as Olga Nordstrom, a young girl whose left leg was shorter than her right leg.
The episode was initially headed by guest director Alf Kjellin, but he didn’t make it to the final cut.
Arngrim addressed the on-set drama in her 2010 book, Confessions of a Prairie Bitch. “Alf Kjellin was doing a fine job,” she wrote. "Then, we got to the part where Nellie gets her comeuppance.”
After Landon and Kjellin butted heads over using footage of the pond scene shot with a stunt double, Landon wanted to “get on with the aftermath,” Arngrim wrote. Teh young actress sat in the muddy water while the Little House patriarch adorned her with “green, stringy algae.” She also shared that Landon poured the “filthy pond water” over her head—and appeared to relish in doing so.
Arngrim noted that Kjellin became infuriated and screamed at Landon, and that’s when all broke loose in Walnut Grove. “The two of them went on like this. They appeared about to kill one another right in front of me,” she wrote. “It ended with a mutual ‘f--- off.’”
Landon then fired Kjellin before going back to dressing Arngrim with algae.
