An Indiana hospital is investigating viral video after a woman said she was forced out while in active labor, and delivered her baby on the side of the road minutes later.
Mercedes Wells said she went to Franciscan Hospital in Crown Point, Indiana, just after midnight believing she was in labor. At the time, she was told by a nurse she was 3 centimeters dilated, she wrote on social media.
“I was put on monitors for over 5 hours with steady contractions. I walked the halls of the labor and delivery unit with contractions 5 minutes apart. Then 4 minutes apart. Then 1 minute apart. I was checked for the last time around early Sunday morning. 11/16,” Wells wrote. “The nurse said she can feel the baby head but there’s still no change and i was still at 3 centimeters. She said if my labor persist then come back but right now you are being discharged.”
Wells said she fought the decision but was told it was the “doctor’s orders” to discharge her.
In videos posted to Leon Wells’ social media accounts documenting his wife’s experience, Mercedes Wells can be seen crying as she was wheeled out of the hospital, at times shaking and breathing through pain as her family says they will be taking her to another facility to have her baby.
Leon Wells said eight minutes after being discharged, his wife delivered their newborn child in his truck. He shared videos of his wife holding their newborn baby in his car.
“I delivered our baby in the truck! After being discharged from the hospital!” he wrote in the caption.
In a statement, Franciscan Health said “the health and safety of our patients is always our top priority.”
“We have launched an internal investigation into the alleged incident,” the statement read. “Due to patient privacy laws and our own policies pertaining to internal investigations, we are unable to comment further at this time.”
While no further details on the hospital’s decision were given, the Wells family said they believe race played a role in why their concerns were dismissed.
