Distance swimmer Alex Barone has verbally committed to continue his career at Texas A&M University beginning in the fall of 2027. Barone currently competes for Austin Preparatory School in Reading, Massachusetts, and Charles River Aquatics.
Barone was recognized as one of SwimSwam’s “Best of the Rest” (BOTR) distance freestylers in our Way Too Early Recruit Rankings for the Boys’ High School Class of 2027. This marks Texas A&M’s third BOTR recruit from that class. Barone is also a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.

In March, Barone, representing Austin Preparatory School, was a two-time champion at the 2025 NEPSAC Division II Championship (SCY), winning the 200 free (1:38.59) and 500 free (4:28.85). Both performances were personal bests at the time.
Barone triumphed again later in the month at the Speedo Sectionals in Ithaca (SCY), posting several lifetime bests in the 200, 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyle events. He finished as the runner-up in the 500 free (4:26.20) and 1000 free (9:09.49), placed 4th in the 1650 free (15:40.22), 6th in the 200 free (1:38.03), and 16th in the 100 free (46.70).
This past summer, Barone was a finalist in several long course events at the Futures Championship in Ocala, placing 7th in the 200 free (1:52.74), 9th in the 200 fly (2:04.82), 13th in the 400 free (4:03.07), 20th in the 800 free (8:30.47), and 28th in the 100 free (52.62). His swims in the 200 free, 400 free, 800 free, and 200 fly remain his best performances.

Barone still has nearly two years to continue dropping time before arriving on campus, and he would already be a valuable addition to Texas A&M’s distance squad. Last season’s fastest time in the 500 free was a 4:17.28, posted by Trey Dickey, who has since graduated. Dickey also holds the school records in the 1000 free (8:57.62) and 1650 free (14:46.70).
Barone will arrive on campus alongside BOTR recruits Micah Tennison and Jackson Irwin, as well as fellow commits Quinn Caputo and Parker Knapp. Irwin should be a strong training partner for him, with times of 4:27.96 in the 500 free, 9:15.04 in the 1000 free, and 15:19.04 in the 1650 free.
