PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Flag football has gained popularity in Section V sports and now local universities are adding flag football to their sports offerings.
St. John Fisher University announced on Monday that it will add a women’s flag football team in 2026. Fisher will join five other schools in the Empire 8 Conference in offering the sport: SUNY Brockport, SUNY Geneseo, Hartwick College, Elmira College, and Russell Sage College.
In New York state, over 4,000 students play flag football, with more than 30 teams competing in Section V. The sport will make its debut in the Summer 2028 Olympics.
Currently, Fisher’s athletics department is working to recruit athletes and look for a head coach. The team is expected to have 20 to 25 student-athletes. In the past several years, Fisher has also added teams for men’s volleyball and men’s wrestling and men’s and women’s ice hockey.
