A police department in Racine County, Wisconsin, has shut down for good, with many residents expressing concern and the department saying the decision to permanently close was “solely made by the Village Board.”
According to a Facebook post, the Village of Sturtevant Police Department officially closed its doors and ended law enforcement services to the community of roughly 7,000 residents at 6:15 a.m. Sunday.
“We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all of you for your years of support, partnership, and trust,” the post said. “Your engagement and commitment to keeping our village safe have made a lasting difference.”
As part of the change, the Racine County Sheriff’s Office will begin handling calls within the service area, the post said.
WTMJ, the NBC affiliate in Milwaukee, reported the Sturtevant village board started exploring shutting down the police department and outsourcing law enforcement services in August, but it remained unclear what prompted the decision. Multiple residents said they were caught by surprise, sharing frustration about learning of the potential change through social media rather than official channels.
In comments under the Facebook post about why the closure wasn’t on local election ballots, Sturtevant Police said the decision was “solely made by the Village Board.”
“At numerous meetings it was requested by multiple individuals to have this decision go to a referendum on the 2026 election cycle,” a response from the Village of Sturtevant Police Department said. “Obviously those requests were denied due to numerous reasons which were provided via Village Board.”
As of Monday morning, the Facebook post had drawn more than 450 comments.
The police department directed residents with questions to contact the Sturtevant Village Hall, at (262) 886-7201.
Brent McCoy, president of the Sturtevant Professional Police Association, told WTMJ at the time the department felt blindsided.
“The communication hasn’t been there between the village side and us. We have had no talks with any of the trustees. No communication as far as their plans with this. And we’re looking to get that communication,” McCoy said.
At the time of publication, the Village of Sturtevant had not responded to NBC Chicago’s request for comment.
