Terrence Lorran Smith, is currently serving a 42-years-to life sentence for several crimes committed from Jan. 7, 2005 to June 1, 2005, including residential burglary, assault with intent to commit a specific sex offense, forcible rape, forcible digital penetration, and forcible oral copulation.

District Attorney Krishna Abrams said in a press release Friday that Smith had gone on “a horrific crime spree” in Fairfield, breaking into homes and sexually assaulting women who lived there. One of the victims was Shaundra Stanio, who was home alone with her toddler. “Shaundra Stanio, who was in a severely weakened state during the attack due to her ongoing battle with cancer pleaded with her attacker not to harm her,” the press release reads. “She offered to give him her purse and all the money she had, but instead of taking the money, her attacker told her that he was sorry she had cancer and proceeded to sexually assault her.”
On July 1, 2005, a month after Smith was arrested, Stanio “bravely testified from her hospital bed answering questions about her attack,” the D.A. press release notes. “Prior to the conditional examination, Shaundra had told her family it was extremely important for her to testify so that her words might prevent someone else from becoming a victim. Three days later on July 4th, Shaundra lost her long and courageous battle with breast cancer.“
Abrams was calls the case one of the “saddest and most disturbing cases I have tried in my career.”
In the release she notes, “It was difficult to hold back tears watching Shaundra display such strength and courage during the final days of her life.”
When Smith was sentenced, several family members spoke, including her brother who told the judge, “This man attacked and violated a woman who was too sick to defend herself, too sick to defend her child, and too sick to even scream. What he took from her was terrible. He took her ability to get any joy out of the last few months of her life.”
Stanio’s mother further expressed her attacker took away all the fighting spirit she had left.
And as previously reported, her father told the court that she was devastated by the violent attack.
“After that happened, she just gave up. She was dead in a couple of months,” he said at the time.
Other victims also spoke at the sentencing hearing.
One woman who was attacked said she still lived in fear because of what Smith had done to her.
“When I’m alone, I’m afraid. I can’t sleep without a light on due to the acts that were done in my home,” she told the court. “My life has been turned upside down.”
Smith has only served 20 years of his 42-years-to-life sentence, but due to recent changes in California law, he was entitled to an early hearing because he has reached his “Elderly Parole Eligibility Date” based upon his age (50 years old).
At the hearing, the Board of Parole listened to Smith and closing arguments from counsel. The Board of Parole then deliberated and denied Inmate Smith’s request for release finding he currently poses an unreasonable risk to the community should he be released at this time.
