A beloved rom-com heroine has taken a permanent spot in central London. Actress Renée Zellweger was in attendance for the unveiling of a bronze statue honoring her famous character, Bridget Jones. The ceremony, which took place in the cinema-centric Leicester Square on November 17, marks a milestone for the character created by author Helen Fielding and played by Zellweger across four films. The Oscar winner wore a black full-length coat dress with white Christian Louboutin heels to the ceremony.

The Bridget Jones sculpture joins an already established gallery of film icons, including Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Paddington Bear, Charlie Chaplin, and Gene Kelly from Singin’ in the Rain. The moment was especially poignant for Eric Fellner, co-chair of Working Title, the studio behind the film adaptations. Fellner called the statue’s existence a beautiful full-circle moment for the franchise's origins: “I love the idea that [Fielding’s] brilliant writing in a newspaper 30 years ago ends up as a statue in Leicester Square,” Fellner told The Guardian. “It’s kind of gorgeous.”

Fellner emphasized the character’s unique appeal and her new place among film legends. He was “over-excited” that the statue was happening, adding, “I think it’s great because Bridget’s a proper London heroine and the idea of having Bridget ever present in a brilliant location in the centre of London is really exciting.”
Zellweger was joined by several key figures from the Bridget Jones universe. Fielding attended, alongside co-star Sally Phillips (Shazzer) and actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall, who played men vying for Bridget's affections in the most recent installment, Mad About the Boy.

The excitement in London led to a look to the future of the series. While Fielding has not written a fifth book from which a film could be adapted, Fellner stated that he would be happy to move forward, should Fielding come up with an idea. Zellweger has also been enthusiastic about a return to the character.

While the film went straight to streaming in the US, it was a major hit in the UK and in other territories, grossing more than $100 million internationally.
