First of all, if this doesn’t become a permanent offering, I might just have to start a protest. Whoever came up with the idea to take one of my personal favorite comfort foods and turn it into an on-the-go snack deserves an award—and I’d like to personally shake their hand while we’re at it.

This savory comfort classic features a rich, flaky crust stuffed with traditional chicken pot pie filling: mostly dark meat chicken, peas, carrots and potatoes. It’s rich, savory and perfectly packaged for versatility, reliability and convenience. Trader Joe’s own supplier (who they say “just so happens to specialize in savory, handheld creations”) personally ensures that the filling is thick and hearty, “so as not to make a mess when you bite into your pie,” yet still creamy.

And I can actually attest to that myself—at first bite, I thought there wasn’t enough filling, only to realize that if it were as hearty as a traditional pot pie, it would be too soupy and spill everywhere. And if you’ve ever bitten into a freshly microwaved Hot Pocket and been burned by the molten lava inside, you’ll understand why this balance is just right.

Why These Handheld Pot Pies Have Me Hooked

Aside from the convenience of handheld snacking and the fact that it uses a recipe I’ve loved my entire life, I really enjoyed the presentation and overall structure of this pastry pocket. Not only did it bake well with a satisfying golden-brown crust, but the pastry itself was also surprisingly flaky, fluffy and sturdy enough to hold all the hearty ingredients inside like a pro.

When I tore the pocket in half, I initially worried there wasn’t enough filling. But as I started eating, I realized it was actually a very balanced mix. No single ingredient overpowers the others, and while a “more stuffed” version might be nice, I still felt satisfied after just one and got the full experience of a classic chicken pot pie with each bite.

How to Heat Trader Joe's Handheld Chicken Pot Pies

This is the easy part: pop these suckers in your choice of air fryer, microwave or oven and have the perfect comfort snack in minutes. The microwave is the quickest, followed by the air fryer, but these days I’m a big proponent of using the oven, so that’s the route I’d take. Preheat to 350°F, remove the pockets from their plastic wrappers and place them on a baking sheet in the center rack. Bake for about 25-minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F. Remove from the oven and head out the door.

Both the microwave and air fryer are just as easy: start by removing the plastic wrapper, then heat for 15- to 16-minutes at 350°F in the air fryer, or a quick 1-minute 30-seconds on high in the microwave using a microwave-safe dish. And trust me, I know this better than anyone—when hunger strikes, there’s no judgment on how you heat it. The goal is always the same: delicious, craving-satisfying results.

Make sure to grab a box on your next Trader Joe’s run, who knows how long they’ll stay in stock or if they’ll ever be back. I know I’ll be heading out this week to stock up before they disappear. Here’s hoping enough fan feedback brings them back later this year or early next. Either way, they’ll have a dedicated customer in me while supplies last.
