FAA’s restrictions on flights end Monday morning; Tracking impact on Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Federal Aviation Administration is lifting all restrictions on commercial flights to 40 major airports, just in time for travelers’ Thanksgiving plans.

The restrictions officially lift at 6 a.m. on Monday. The FAA cut back on flights to maintain travel safety as air traffic controllers exhibited signs of strain. Air traffic controllers weren’t paid during the record-long government shutdown and some called out, citing stress and the need to take on second jobs. The agency says staffing levels have now “stabilized” with the shutdown over.

News10NBC is at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport tracking the latest. The FAA’s list didn’t include the Rochester airport, but it did include several airports that Rochester offered flights to.

One traveler told us that, with the restrictions lifted, it feels like a weight lifted off their shoulders. We previously spoke with Rochester airport director Andy Moore about how the shutdown impacted the airport.

The flight cuts lasted about 10 days and caused quite a few problems nationwide during that time. Ground stops and canceled thousands of flights in airports all over the country.

There’s been a steady decline in staff-related events since the government reopened last week. NBC reports there were six staffing incidents on Friday, eight on Saturday, and only one on Sunday. That number during the shutdown peaked at 81 incidents.

AAA just released its Thanksgiving holiday travel forecast. The nonprofit says many people have already made changes to plans because of the flight cuts, so there will be more drivers on the roads. Nearly 82 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles for the holiday. That’s up 2% from last year.
