Justin Trudeau's ex-wife, Sophie Grégoire, is opening up about her feelings toward the former Canadian Prime Minister dating popstar Katy Perry.
The former first lady appeared in a rare interview with Arlene Dickinson on her Arlene is Alone podcast, on Nov. 12. The podcast explores "the realities of singlehood with honesty and heart," and that was especially true for Grégoire, who is still amid an ongoing divorce from the politician two years after announcing their separation on Aug. 2, 2023.
“We’re human beings and stuff affects us. Normal," Grégoire said when asked about the recent and very public news of her ex-husband dating the "Firework" singer. "How you react to stuff is your decision. So I choose to try to listen to the music instead of the noise. I’m very aware that a lot of public stuff out there can be triggers.”
“Does that mean I don’t have emotions? That I don’t cry, scream, laugh? No," she continued. "Especially that I’m a super tender heart. But it’s my decision after that, between the emotion and the reaction. I’ll let myself be disappointed... I’ll let myself be angry, be sad. And I know for a fact how important it is, as a mental health advocate, to feel those emotions.”
“It’s your choice to see that and be like, ‘How am I going to let that affect my happiness?'" she added. "What am I going to do to take care of myself and to be my best parent?"
However, Grégoire made it clear that she's got a great coparenting relationship with her former husband of 18 years, and would never consider herself a "single mom" to their three kids: Xavier, 18, Ella-Grace, 16, and Hadrien, 11.
"I have a partnership with a father who has such deep love and availability to his children," she said of Trudeau. "Especially in the world that we live today, the scrutiny, the speed at which things are happening... That's hard to face as a family. So, I can't say that I'm a single mom because we've raised these kids together."
Even amid their divorce, they still "call each other up" or text to make sure they're on the same page about things going on with the kids. "We really try to build cohesion so that the kids feel that cohesion," she said.
And no matter who they're dating, she and Trudeau are determined to put their family first. “We have separate lives, but we have one family life,” she told Dickinson. “You need a common, conscious decision that our family is our greatest creation and we’re going to feed it together, no matter if we’re on different life paths.”

Perry is also a mom, sharing daughter Daisy Dove Bloom with Orlando Bloom, from whom she split after nearly a decade together. She was spotted out with the former world leader in June 2025, less than a month after formally announcing the breakup.
After several public outings together, Perry confirmed the dating rumors in late October after a fan proposed to her during a concert. “This guy is trying to get me to marry him and he has a ring in his hand,” Perry told the crowd in a viral TikTok video. “No! I am dating someone else for crying out f--king loud.”
