Surviving Milli Vanilli Star Nearly Unrecognizable in Rare Appearance — 35 Years After Grammy Scandal

More than three decades after one of the most infamous moments in music history, an ’80s chart-topping figure linked to the Milli Vanilli Grammy scandal stepped out in Los Angeles — this time celebrating a project earning new industry acclaim.

Fab Morvan, the surviving half of the duo that dominated late-’80s and early-’90s pop before the truth about their vocals came to light, appeared at a book event in Los Angeles this weekend. Morvan was photographed outside his LA Times Book Release Party at Barnes & Noble, where he greeted attendees alongside collaborators Parisa Rose and Alisha Magnus-Louis.

It marks a notable moment for Morvan, whose audiobook You Know It’s True: The Real Story of Milli Vanilli was recently nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording — 35 years after the group’s original Grammy was revoked.

The other nominees in Morvan's category include  Trevor Noah, Ketanji Brown Jackson, Kathy Garver and the Dalai Lama.

Morvan’s rare appearance comes amid a wave of renewed interest in the Milli Vanilli story. The project, published by The Los Angeles Tribune, has been praised for revisiting the duo’s rise, the deception that made them household names, and the fallout that followed.

The Tribune celebrated the nomination in a statement, calling the story “one of the most talked-about” of the awards season.

“The Los Angeles Tribune Publishing’s Grammy-nominated project ‘You Know It’s True’ has quickly become one of the most talked-about stories of this awards season,” the organization wrote, adding that the audiobook “has captured global attention and inspired audiences around the world.”

They also described Morvan’s journey as “a redemption arc — a journey 35 years in the making — and one of the greatest comeback stories in pop culture history.”

In another post, the Tribune added, “A story of redemption, resilience, and truth, this powerful audiobook brings new depth to one of pop culture’s most talked-about journeys.”

Morvan's Milli Vanilli partner Rob Pilatus died in 1998 at age 32 of an accidental overdose, just as the pair were preparing a comeback album. His death marked the end of Milli Vanilli as a duo, leaving Morvan as the sole surviving member to carry the group’s complicated legacy forward. The new audiobook revisits both their meteoric rise and the pressures that ultimately contributed to the group’s downfall.

Morvan celebrated the milestone with his own statement on Instagram, writing:"Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s official, we made it to the nomination, which means the book is nominated for best audio book, story telling, and narration …To be continued. Peace one love @moerocklovesyou @_parisarose @youknowitstruebook @losangelestribune health is all invest. Peace one love ❤️?????."

Meanwhile, executive producer Parisa Roseshared lines from the book that mirrored the project’s spirit: “Go for it, with guts and absolutely zero apologies,” and “No, we didn’t tiptoe toward success, we ran full-speed into it.”

She added that writing about Milli Vanilli required “guts and absolutely zero apologies.”

A New Chapter for an ’80s Pop Figure

The sighting in Los Angeles offers a full-circle moment in Morvan’s public life. The Milli Vanilli scandal remains one of music’s most notorious—a duo that sold millions, topped charts worldwide, and won Best New Artist at the 1990 Grammys, only to have the award revoked when it was revealed they hadn’t sung on their records.

Now, Morvan stands at the center of a different kind of headline: one rooted not in controversy, but in ownership, reflection and reinvention.

The 67th Annual Grammy Awards will air Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026, from Crypto Arena in Los Angeles, broadcasting live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
