Kai Trump, the granddaughter of Donald Trump, and WNBA star Caitlin Clark are helping to bring new attention to women’s professional golf, but not everyone is happy about it.
Both celebs helped the LPGA draw more attention on social media and in person at the LGPA’s Annika event, a tournament hosted by Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Fla.

While 18-year-old Kai Trump helped create a buzz, there were those who questioned if she was worthy of playing in the tournament.
“She is the 461st-ranked junior golfer in the world and has never teed it up in a USGA event. Given the stakes of the penultimate event on the schedule, Trump is undeserving of a spot in the field. She has LPGA aspirations and will play collegiately at the University of Miami, but it was clear that this week would be a massive step up in competition for her — one that would almost certainly end in high scores and a missed cut,” wrote GOLF’s Josh Schrock.
His observations were on target. In her first round, she was 13 over par with a score of 83 that was not televised. On Friday, Trump improved with a 75, and was shown on television, but she ended up last in the field by six shots.
But as GOLF’s Schrock points out, Trump’s participation wasn’t necessarily about her score on the course, rather her 8 million social media followers tuning into the LPGA.
And Trump didn’t seem to be disappointed by her performance. She posted a carousel of photos from the event on her Instagram along with the caption, “What an incredible honor and opportunity to compete in my first LPGA Tour Event at @theannikalpga !This week was an absolute dream come true. There are so many amazing people I want to thank for making it happen and for being so supportive.”
After giving thanks to the Doyle family and others, she continued. “You all made this week so special for me. It was a lifelong dream to play in a LPGA event, and this is just the start. I learned so much about my game and myself out there. I was so impressed by all the LPGA players I met and got to watch as well. I’m going to use this experience to keep growing as a person and as a golfer. Thank you all for the support! ?”
View this post on InstagramClark’s return to the pro-am tournament on Wednesday got even more of a buzz on social media and in person.
According to data gathered by Golfweek’s Beth Ann Nichols, the WNBA stars appearance prompted 2,693 posts on X, which led to 241,704 engagements and 18,325,849 impressions. The tournament’s official Instagram account was up 591% over last year. Although the crowds at the course weren’t as large as they were for her pro-am appearance last year, they were still “crowds several rows deep trying to get view of the WNBA superstar,” according to GOLF.
“I think it just shows how powerful supporting women can truly be,” Clark said during an on-course interview with Golf Channel during the pro-am. “I’ve always been a big advocate of that, of supporting women’s sports. And always been a big fan of whether it’s golf or soccer, volleyball or whatever it is.”
