Resurrection Christian volleyball eliminated in Class 3A semifinals

DENVER — Resurrection Christian’s bid for a second 3A volleyball state championship in three years came up short Saturday at the Denver Coliseum.

For the second consecutive season, the No. 2 seed Cougars lost in the semifinals, falling to Patriot League rival and No. 3 seed Eaton in four sets, 21-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-14.

“We didn’t make the plays we needed to make,” RCS head coach Ben Reeser said. “In the end, Eaton’s a good team and we needed to make those plays. We’re capable of it. Today wasn’t our day.”

The semifinal against the Reds was a rematch of the team’s league contest, which was also won by the Reds in four sets at EHS.

RCS opened the match by taking the first set. The score was tied 20-20 before the Cougars closed it with a 4-0 run to win it 25-21.

“I feel like we were very confident,” RCS senior middle hitter Kaylynn Pardue said. “We had such a good spirit before the game, and we were super hyped. I think toward the second or third set, we were just a little, not scared, but I think we got in our heads a little bit.”

Eaton raced out to a 10-2 lead in the second set and the Cougars couldn’t catch up. RCS got as close as 16-10, but the Reds opened up a 20-13 advantage and ended the match with a 5-2 run.

The Cougars were back in the match in the third set. They had a 20-18 lead, but the Reds rallied to tie the match at 20. The teams were also tied at 22 and 23 before the Reds got the final two points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Needing a win to force a decisive fifth set, the Cougars fell behind early in the fourth and trailed 15-9. Eaton slowly pulled away, eventually taking a 22-14 lead and then scoring the final three points to end the Cougars’ season.

“I think we started really strong,” RCS senior libero Blake Coors said. “We had a lot of momentum. I think we played really well. I think we battled hard. I think we fought. I’m proud of everyone. It’s hard to go out early when you wanted to go all the way, but I’m proud of everybody.”

The Cougars took the long way to get to the semifinal. After they had a bye in the first round, they won the first two sets of their second-round match against The Classical Academy on Thursday before losing the next three and dropping into the elimination bracket.

Three times the Cougars staved off elimination, defeating No. 9 Gunnison (25-11, 25-19, 25-15) and No. 5 Stargate School (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) on Friday and then upending The Village — last year’s state champion — by scores of 25-15, 25-23, 19-25 and 25-16 Saturday morning. It was Village who knocked RCS out in the semifinals last season.

“I’m extremely proud of them for how they battled through Friday, battled through this morning and battled through most of this one, too,” Reeser said. “We may have run out of gas a little bit from going the long way. We took the scenic route to get here, and sometimes the scenic route takes a little out of you.”

RCS finished the season 26-4, the most wins in a season for the program since the 2015 team went 27-2 and won the Class 2A state championship.

Two of their losses were to Eaton and the others were to 4A state finalist University and 5A state finalist Valor Christian.

All three of the Cougars’ seniors, Kaylynn Pardue, Coors and Amanda Pardue signed to continue their volleyball careers in college Wednesday: Kaylynn Pardue at UTEP, Coors at Colorado Christian and Amanda Pardue at Erskine College.

“I’m very grateful to be a part of this program,” Kaylynn Pardue said. “I love how hard this program works almost every single day. We were practicing six days a week for two to three hours. So, I think we did amazing this season, and I wouldn’t have changed a thing.”
