Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Anna Mumford has made a verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Connecticut, becoming the first publicized commit in the school’s recruiting class of 2031. She confirmed the decision in an email to SwimSwam, writing:
I am extremely excited and humbled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Connecticut! I want to thank my family, friends and coaches for supporting me through this process, and a special thanks to Coach Cris and Coach Nicole for giving me this opportunity. Go Huskies!!
Mumford hails from Selbyville, Delaware, where she attends Sussex Academy and trains year-round with the Delaware Swim Team. She’s a distance freestyler with her best events represented by the 500 and 1650, while she’s also strong in the 200 free and both IMs.
The 2024-25 season saw Mumford produce massive time drops across the board, with improvements ranging from three seconds in the 200 free to more than 20 seconds in the mile:
200 Free: 1:54.75 → 1:51.73 (-3.02 seconds) 500 Free: 5:00.49 → 4:52.88 (-7.61 seconds) 1650 Free: 17:13.35 → 16:52.45 (-20.90 seconds) 200 IM: 2:13.68 → 2:09.81 (-3.87 seconds) 400 IM: 4:43.07 → 4:34.59 (-8.48 seconds)All of Mumford’s current best times come from the Middle Atlantic Senior Championships in March, which was her clear best meet of the season. She grabbed a pair of third-place finishes in the 500 and 1650, finished eighth in the 400 IM, and got to the wall 13th in the 200 IM and 17th in the 200 free. This meet has regularly served as a target for her—in 2024 she was also third in both the 500 and 1650 after aging up from the age group division, where she won the 500 and took silver in the 1650 in 2023.
In high school competition, Mumford is the two-time defending Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) state champion in the 500 free, while she also won the 200 free this season after earning bronze a year ago.
UConn, led by head coach Chris Maiello, is a member of the Big East Conference. The Huskies placed second to Villanova by just 72 points at last year’s championships.
Based on her current times, Mumford would have ranked second on the team in the 500 and 1650, fifth in the 200 free and 400 IM, and seventh in the 200 IM. At the conference meet, her personal best in the 1650 would have placed her fifth, while her 500 free would have earned her sixth. Her current bests in the 200 free and 400 IM would have slotted her into ‘C’ finals, while it took 2:08.10 to secure a second swim in the 200 IM.
Junior Norah Rome led the way in the 200, 500, and 1650 with times of 1:49.70, 4:49.96, and 16:33.12, but she will have graduated by the time Mumford arrives on campus, opening the door for Mumford to become the team’s top distance freestyler. She will also overlap a year with 4:19 400 IMer Nadine Amin, providing a strong training partner.
