The upcoming NFL coaching carousel is going be wild and unpredictable.
However, it will not include Bill Belichick.
In an Instagram post shared on Friday, Bill Belichick shot down NFL coaching rumors before they could truly get rolling by reaffirming his commitment to the University of North Carolina football team. Even in my wildest dreams, my imagination could never cook up a scenario in which the legendary NFL coach would be dispelling coaching rumors with a social media post. But here it is:

Why the 2026 NFL coaching carousel will not include Bill Belichick
Bill Belichick’s North Carolina Tar Heels entered the weekend of college football action with a 4-5 overall record and a 2-3 mark in ACC play. There were high expectations for the Tar Heels, especially after the unexpected hiring of the future Pro Football Hall of Famer to coach the squad. However, this year has not gone as planned for UNC. Moreover, it has been borderline disastrous. There were Hard Knocks rumors, a Hulu show that got axed during the season, and whispers of an in-season breakup. Throw an uninspired sub-.500 record in Year 1 as a college coach and you’ve got a revolving door of disappointment when it comes to Tar Heels football.
With that being said, I understand why Bill Belichick is trying to get out in front of the rumor mill. With the New York Giants dismissing Brian Daboll as their head coach earlier in the week, Belichick’s name began to surface as a possible candidate. If you’ll recall, Belichick was a Giants assistant from 1979 to 1990 working with (and for) Bill Parcells. Given the New York media’s obsession with splash hires, it made sense that Belichick’s name would get thrown into the mix. Unfortunately, the headline-writers out east will need to expand their search with Belichick withdrawing his name from consideration before the gig could even be offered.
If you’ll recall, Bill Belichick’s circle wanted to angle for the Bears head-coaching vacancy that came open after the firing of Matt Eberflus. However, it was decided last December that Chicago’s football team was going to pass on Belichick to target Ben Johnson as their top head coach candidate. That seems to have worked out in the Bears’ favor. Meanwhile, the lack of interest from NFL teams has led Belichick to take his coaching talents to the collegiat ranks. Go figure.
