Five things to know as infighting in Corbyn’s Your Party continues

MP Adnan Hussain has quit Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana’s political party over “persistent infighting” and alleged “veiled prejudice” against Muslim men in it.

Hussain, the MP for Blackburn resigned from Your Party on Thursday, two weeks before its conference in Liverpool.

His departure comes amid a feud in the party over how it handles funds following extraordinary clashes between its interim leader, Corbyn, and Sultana.

On Thursday, Corbyn shared his vision for the party, which is planning a leadership election in the new year, in a post on his social media, which was only signed by him.

Here are five things we know about the chaos within the party:

    Party feud

According to reports, Sultana allegedly declined to transfer the full funds requested by Your Party officials from MOU Operations Ltd, a company that received donations for the party, which Sultana solely controls.

Hussain leaving the party comes after he and four other Independent Alliance MPs including Corbyn, issued a statement on Thursday, which claimed hundreds of thousands of pounds donated to it “by supporters in good faith” have since “remained beyond its reach”.

In the statement, issued minutes before Sultana appeared on BBC Question Time, they also described the funds being withheld as “extremely frustrating and disheartening”, and said some of the difficulties the party has faced were “deliberate acts”.

They said: “Your Party’s founding purpose is to stand for the many against the few who hold the wealth and power in our country.

“A dedicated team of volunteers has been working on a shoestring budget to deliver a founding conference at the end of the month. Their efforts are heroic, but without funding Your Party’s capacity has been severely restricted.”

The statement added a “small portion” of the funds was transferred to the party that day, which was “insufficient” and they will continue to pursue the immediate transfer of all the money donate.

According to The Guardian, Your Party officials requested that about £800,000 be transferred, but Sultana offered to return only £600,000, and argued the rest should be kept for potential future legal or administrative expenses.

A spokesperson for Sultana said she was “working to transfer all funds and data to Your Party” and “the first £200,000” was sent this week.

Your Party officials have accused MoU of shifting the goalposts.

They also claimed they sent multiple proposals to move the funds, but were ignored by MoU.

A Your Party spokesman said: “We are focused on delivering a successful founding conference for our members.

“While this task is made considerably harder by the continued retention of Your Party funds by MOU Operations Ltd, we will not allow anything or anyone to stop this party from going ahead.

“Working-class people need a party which stands up for them.”

Why did Hussain leave Your Party?

Hussain said he decided to leave Your Party because its culture had become “dominated by persistent infighting, factional competition and a struggle for power, position and influence”.

He said he was “deeply troubled by the way certain figures within the steering process, particularly Muslim men, have been spoken about and treated”.

Hussain said: “At times, the rhetoric used has been disturbingly similar to the very political forces the left claims to oppose. I witnessed insinuations about capability, dismissive attitudes and language that carried, at the very least, veiled prejudice.”

Hussain also said he decided to step down due to “very serious and damaging internal disputes”, but did not elaborate further.

Sultana, Corbyn and Your Party have been contacted by The i Paper for comment about Hussian’s resignation.

    ‘Victim of sabotage’

Sultana allies claim she’s being “sabotaged” over the funds row.

A source told Sky News: “It’s unbelievable really. She’s transferring money as promised, so it’s available for conference, they know perfectly well they’re demanding something impossible, and they wait until she’s about to appear on BBC QT to use official party social media channels to publish that.”

They added: “It’s hard to interpret it as anything other than deliberate sabotage, because they’re worried she’ll win a leadership contest because her vision is much closer to what members are looking for.”

    Ongoing rows

The row is the latest in a series of clashes between Corbyn and Sultana.

She announced the formation of the party and that she was leaving Labour on X in July.

At the time Corbyn confirmed there were ongoing discussions around forming a new party but had not been expecting the announcement, The Times reported.

A source claims that the Sultana’s announcement had “frustrated” him and he had not agreed to Sultana releasing it.

It is also claimed he asked her to delete the post after she shared it.

Sultana and Corbyn also clashed in September after she launched a website that gathered membership fees from thousands of the party’s initial supporters, without a sign-off from him.

Corbyn later urged his supporters to ignore it and cancel any payments, saying the site had been set up without approval.

He also confirmed the party had referred the matter to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

In response, Sultana accused Corbyn of turning their alliance into a “sexist boys’ club” and said she took the step of launching a membership portal so that “supporters could continue to engage and organise”.

She insisted that this was in line with the roadmap set out to members and that this is a “safe, secure, legitimate portal for the party”.

Sultana hired defamation lawyers following the spat but later said she will not be pursuing legal action “for the sake of the party”, and as “an act of good faith”.

Corbyn also later apologised for the confusion caused over the website.

    Fallout from spat

Many of the party’s supporters have suggested they are no longer likely to vote for it over Corbyn and Sultana’s public spat.

One person told The London Standard they had paid to register for Your Party, but following the fallout they now want their money back.
