HENRIETTA, N.Y. (WHEC) – Brighton football won an entertaining Class A regional final over East/World of Inquiry, 24-14.
East scored first, on a short reception turned into long touchdown by freshman Legacy Taylor. Brighton would outscore the Eagles 24-7 the rest of the way, with some tricks along the ride.
In the second half, only up 7, Brighton faked a punt inside their own 20-yard line, with Matthew Heininger picking up the first down. Only thing is? Heininger called his own number.
“That was his call. I was at first like what on earth are you doing? But it’s Matt and you gotta trust your guys to make plays and he made a play,” said Brighton football head coach Stephen Lian.
However, later in the drive, on another 4th down, East got the stop, looking to capitalize. But on their ensuing drive, quarterback Taye Brown threw an interception, and Brighton defensive back Leo Hopkins returned it for a touchdown.
“I did get that pick six, I just kept it focused on the next play and really trying to seal the game,” said Hopkins.
East would make things interesting, returning the kickoff for a touchdown, but a long Brighton drive and a field goal with about one minute to go, gave them a 10-point lead and all but wrapped it up.
Brighton football will now play in the Class A regionals in Buffalo.
