ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A group of protesters gathered outside Sen. Chuck Schumer’s office in Rochester on Friday, calling for his resignation as Senate minority leader.
They demanded new leadership after eight Democratic senators broke ranks to make a deal with Republicans to reopen the federal government without meeting Democratic health care demands.
“Someone who’s willing to fight. Someone who’s not necessarily concerned about their position of power, how to maintain it, how they should end up remaining in that position,” said Marcia Glenn from Indivisible Outreach. “Someone who’s willing to go to the mat. Because the foot soldiers out here are out going to the mat on a regular basis. We need to know that the leaders representing us are indeed willing to go to that same mat.”
Schumer voted against the bill to reopen the government and criticized it. However, his critics argued that he failed to keep the Democratic Party unified.
