Governor Josh Stein is urging the public to not be provoked as U.S. Border Patrol agents arrive in Charlotte this weekend.

Stein said in a statement Friday that the agents arriving in Mecklenburg County should be focused on arresting violent criminals and drug traffickers.

“Unfortunately, that’s not always what we have seen with ICE and Border Patrol Agents in Chicago and elsewhere around the country,” said Stein. “The vast majority of people they have detained have no criminal convictions, and some are American citizens.”

Stein encouraged North Carolinians to remain peaceful and follow the law as they stand with their neighbors, and to document and report any problems with federal agents.

“When we see injustice, we bear witness. If you see any inappropriate behavior, use your phones to record and notify local law enforcement, who will continue to keep our communities safe long after these federal agents leave. That’s the North Carolina way.”

    ‘They need to stay home’

Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12) didn’t mince words Friday when asked about the Border Patrol arriving in her district in an ongoing aggressive immigration enforcement by the Trump administration.

“First of all, I think they need to stay home. We don’t need that kind of disruption,” said Adams. “We don’t need them coming in here antagonizing our citizens.”

The veteran Democratic congresswoman said she has heard from numerous constituents worried about how immigration enforcement will unfold in the Queen City.

“When I look at what has happened in other cities, how people have been treated, abused, even in physical ways, we don’t want that in Charlotte. We don’t need that in Charlotte,” Adams told reporters.

On Thursday, U.S. Rep. Tim Moore (NC-14), who also represents parts of Charlotte, said he supports bringing the Border Patrol into the city.

“I’m glad that they’re looking at doing that, and I’m glad at the way they’re approaching it,” said Moore in Raleigh.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol does not comment on its plans, but Moore predicted the CBP would likely stay “for a while” and focus on organized crime.

Charlotte has been in the national spotlight since the killing of Ukrainian immigrant Iryna Zarutska on the city’s light rail system. The event prompted state lawmakers to pass an expansive crime bill this fall, which Gov. Stein signed.

Adams has said she prays for Zarutska’s family, but it is shameful for lawmakers to try to score cheap political points from the tragedy.

On Friday, Adams said the nation has watched immigration enforcement officials come into other cities only to have the situation quickly spiral out of control for the undocumented, the documented, and even local citizens.

“I just think that’s just unconscionable,” Adams lamented.

Like Stein, Adams is encouraging people who are planning to protest Border Patrol enforcement to do so peacefully.

“We certainly hope that these folks coming in here will just pass through and continue on their way,” said Adams.
