Indianapolis Zoo briefly goes on lockdown after chimpanzee escapes exhibit

The Indianapolis Zoo went on lockdown Friday morning after a female chimpanzee “was seen outside her exhibit” and later recaptured, the zoo said in a statement.

The chimpanzee was spotted outside its enclosure shortly after 11 a.m. CST, according to the facility. The zoo didn’t provide information about how the animal escaped.

“Following emergency protocol, the Zoo was immediately locked down, and all guests were escorted to secure locations,” the zoo’s statement read.

The chimpanzee was sedated, the zoo noted, and then returned to its exhibit.

“Zoo guests were safe at all times,” the statement read. “There were no injuries to guests, zoo staff, or the animal.”

The zoo noted its security, animal care and veterinary teams prepare for such scenarios through training and “responded in a textbook and professional manner.”

The zoo reopened to guests “as normal.”
