Around the NFL: Patriots Keep Rolling, Purdy Back, Morton Speaks on Campbell’s Decision, More

Drake Maye and the New England Patriots continued their midseason surge on Thursday Night Football, cruising to a 27-14 win over the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium. The victory marked New England’s eighth straight win and pushed the Patriots to an AFC-best 9-2, while the struggling Jets fell to 2-8.

Patriots Keep Rolling Behind TreVeyon Henderson’s Three-TD Night in Win Over Jets

The Patriots’ offensive balance was on full display, highlighted by rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson’s breakout performance. Filling in for the injured Rhamondre Stevenson, Henderson totaled 93 yards on 24 touches and scored three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) marking his fifth touchdown in the last five days. After a 147-yard effort last week against Tampa Bay, the rookie has made a compelling case to retain a significant role even once Stevenson returns.

While Maye’s stat line wasn’t eye-popping, he showed maturity and poise, distributing the ball efficiently to five different receivers, including Stefon Diggs, who led all pass-catchers with 105 yards. The Patriots controlled the tempo, leaning on a balanced attack that methodically wore down the Jets’ defense and kept Maye clean throughout the night.

Defensively, New England’s front seven dominated, forcing two turnovers and holding New York to just 116 passing yards. On the other side, the Jets’ quarterback carousel continued to disappoint. Justin Fields once again struggled mightily, misfiring on open throws, committing costly turnovers, and fumbling away a crucial fourth-quarter possession that led to a Patriots field goal to seal the game.

Fields’ lone bright spot came on the opening drive when the Jets relied on his legs to move the chains, but the offense unraveled from there. A deflected third-down pass that bounced off left tackle Olu Fashanu’s helmet and a botched snap fumble late in the fourth quarter summed up the night — and perhaps the Jets’ season.

John Morton Backs Dan Campbell’s Move to Take Over Play-Calling

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton had no issue stepping aside for his head coach. Speaking for the first time since Dan Campbell took over offensive play-calling duties in last week’s 44-22 win over Washington, Morton handled the situation with humility and professionalism, making it clear that the only thing that matters to him is winning.

“I fully support it,” Morton said Thursday, via the Detroit News. “Listen, man. I’ve been doing this for a while. I’ve been with head coaches that are offensive guys, play-callers, so I’m used to that. I feel very prideful of things that I was doing. There’s some things I’ve got to learn, no doubt. But listen, I want to do whatever it takes to win.”

It’s easy to support a move when the results look like they did last Sunday. The Lions rolled up 546 total yards, 226 on the ground, and 30 first downs while scoring on all eight of their offensive possessions before kneeling out the clock. Quarterback Jared Goff wasn’t sacked for the first time in five games, and the offense looked like the well-oiled unit that helped Detroit reach last year’s NFC Championship Game.

Morton acknowledged that something felt different against Washington, describing a rhythm and efficiency that had been missing in previous weeks.

“You saw it last week. For one series, we had all first downs,” Morton said. “It’s just first down, second down, first down, second down. And we had those moments this year, but it’s just like everything was clicking last week.”

The question now is whether that offensive outburst was the result of Campbell’s influence on the play sheet — or simply the byproduct of facing a Washington defense that’s been one of the league’s worst all season. Detroit’s next test, against an Eagles unit that stifled the Packers last week, should offer a clearer answer.

Campbell hasn’t ruled out returning the play-calling duties to Morton at some point, and Morton himself seems to be embracing the challenge. Comparing the situation to a benched player working his way back, Morton said he’s taking it in stride.

“That’s just like, ‘OK, I was a starter. Now I’m not. OK. What do I got to do to become a starter again?’” Morton said. “We don’t hire guys who quit. We hire fighters. And that’s what the Lions do.”

Brock Purdy Set to Reclaim Starting Role as 49ers Prepare for Return Trip to Arizona

Brock Purdy is back under center for the San Francisco 49ers. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Thursday on NBC Sports Bay Area that Purdy will return to the starting lineup Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals after missing the past six games with a lingering toe injury.

Purdy initially suffered the injury in Week 1 and attempted to return in Week 4, only to aggravate it and require an extended recovery period. After consulting multiple doctors, the second-year quarterback said there was no need for surgery and that he’s finally feeling healthy enough to play. “I’m excited to be back,” Purdy told reporters Thursday, adding that he feels fully confident in his foot and ready to help the 49ers push toward the playoffs.

Shanahan shared more good news for the offense: rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who’s been sidelined since Week 4 with a knee injury, will also return Sunday.

In Purdy’s absence, veteran Mac Jones started eight games, including each of the past six. The 49ers went 5-3 in those contests, with Jones playing some of the most efficient football of his career. But Shanahan made it clear the switch wasn’t about performance — it was about health. “No, it’s not a hard decision,” Shanahan said. “It’s just more about Brock’s health. It’s been awesome how Mac has played. He has been great. But we’ve got a lot of confidence in Brock, and we know Brock will play at a high level too as long as he’s healthy.”

At 6-4, San Francisco sits just outside the NFC playoff picture, currently third in the NFC West behind Seattle and Los Angeles — two teams that will square off Sunday in a key divisional matchup.

Before the injury, Purdy appeared in two games, completing 65.8 percent of his passes for 586 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions while adding 30 rushing yards on seven carries. Now, with his health restored and key weapons returning, Purdy has a chance to reignite a 49ers offense that’s quietly kept pace in his absence — and potentially push San Francisco back into postseason position.
