Cubs Sign Hard-Throwing Righty Sam Mettert

The Chicago Cubs have their first signing of the offseason! … but it’s not quite THAT type of signing.

That is to say, the Cubs have signed undrafted righty Sam Mettert to a minor league deal, and it just so happened to have taken place at the start of the offseason. But it’s a prospect signing, not a get-this-guy-in-the-big-league-bullpen signing.

The Cubs have agreed to terms on a minor league deal with Chicago native Sam Mettert, per a source. The 6-5 righty graduated from St. John’s last year. They scouted him at Tread Athletics where he was throwing 98 mph. Chose the Cubs over grad school!

If you recognize the Tread Athletics connection, recall that Cubs pitching exec Tyler Zombro is affiliated with the Tread Athletics training facility. The Cubs love to be able to utilize that connection both to improve their current pitchers, and to scout new ones.

And, in terms of raw stuff, Sam Mettert is looking mighty interesting:

Mettert, 22, had a relatively limited major college career, making 39 total relief appearances in 2024 and 2025 at St. John’s. The results weren’t particularly compelling, with walks a major issue. But you can see from that clip, this is a scouting play. Mettert has great velocity, good size, and a bit of funk in the arm angle. Good bones there to work with.

The Cubs clearly want a chance to work with a guy that has some extreme velocity potential, and you never know when something might click with an opportunity to train as a professional.
