Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Ava Schepers has made a verbal commitment to swim and study at Davenport University. She confirmed the decision on SwimCloud, writing:

I am so blessed and thrilled to be announcing my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Davenport University! I first thank God for giving me this opportunity. Thank you to my mom, dad, brothers, coaches, and teammates, as well as everyone who helped me get to where I am today. I would also like to give a big thank you to Coach Justin for giving me this opportunity! Go Panthers!

Schepers expanded to SwimSwam: “After meeting Coach Vasquez and touring the university, I instantly fell in love with the team and culture. I could not be more excited to swim in college and continue my academics at Davenport University!”

    Top SCY Times:

    100 Freestyle: 56.85 200 Freestyle: 1:59.70 500 Freestyle: 5:28.25

The future Panther is from Zeeland, Michigan, where she attends Unity Christian High School and trains year-round with the Western Michigan Swimmers. She specializes in middle-distance freestyle, with her best events being the 100, 200, and 500.

She began her swimming career later in life than most, during the winter of her 8th grade year. As of today, she holds the school record for the 500 free in SCY and sits on the school record board with the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay teams.

Schepers had a blockbuster 2024–25 season, dropping from 58.96 to 56.92 in the 100, 2:09.06 to 1:59.70 in the 200, and 5:42.38 to 5:33.00 in the 500. While it’s early into the 2025-26 campaign, she’s already lowered her personal bests in all three events, slicing over four seconds off her 500 to 5:28.25 and dipping under her bests in the shorter races to 56.85 and 1:59.53.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) will be on tap at the end of the month, Schepers’ target meet of the high school season. Last year, her first time qualifying for the meet, she placed 14th in the 500 with the 5:33.00 and hit the wall 22nd in the 200 free (2:04.18).

Davenport, which competes in Division II’s Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, is led by head coach Justin Vasquez, who joined for the women’s inaugural season of 2018-19. The women placed fifth out of six teams at their first conference championships and have been working on improving their depth since, climbing to fourth in 2025.

On the team’s 2024-25 depth chart, Schepers would have ranked sixth in the 200 free, seventh in the 500 free, and ninth in the 100 free. Junior Julia Mizik (1:55.42) led the Panthers in the 200 free, while sophomore Angie Lorena Gomez (5:05.45) and freshman Nadia Jastrzabek (50.01) topped the standings in the 500 and 100, respectively. Schepers will overlap with Lorena Gomez and Jastrzabek, which will provide her with strong training partners in her top events.

At the 2025 GLIAC Championships, where ‘A’ and ‘B’ finals are offered, times of 54.11 in the 100, 1:56.97 in the 200, and 5:15.14 in the 500 were needed to make the top 16 and score.

Schepers is set to join Lillian Ratliff, Haley Vervlied, and Eleanor Short in the university’s class of 2031.
