“Pete Townshend, please name your top 5 Pete Townshend songs,” host Stephen Colbert requested in a clip shared on the Late Show Instagram account as well as the official accounts for the Who, New York City Center and Quadrophenia, a Rock Ballet.
“Pete Townshend lists his top 5 Pete Townshend songs, and the last one is as relevant as ever,” reads the caption of the post.
“I think the top is ‘Love Reign O’er Me,’” Townshend responded, wearing a blue blazer, red-and-white checkered button-down shirt and a navy beanie. “I think ‘Behind Blue Eyes,’” he added, referring to another Who classic.
“I really love ’Let My Love Open the Door,’” Townshend picked next, referring to his 1980 solo hit.
“I love ‘Baba O’Riley’,” Townshend added, “I think that’s now got 1.5 billion streams on Spotify.”
“That’s nice. That’s four,” Colbert responded. “Bring it home.”
“And of course, that one that is the one that is most applicable to the modern world, which is that our leaders are never any good, and when people try to tell us who to vote for, we always don’t feel quite right about that. So, I wrote this song called ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again,’ and it was, you know, as Bob Dylan said, ‘Don’t follow leaders. you know, follow parking meters.’ It’s kind of a comment on the fact that the people that we put in power always seem to end up breaking their promises.”
Fans were quick to praise Townshend and the music of the Who in the comments.
“’Who’s Next’ is an absolutely genius album and no less relevant today 54 freaking years later,” wrote one fan, praising the 1971 album that includes three of Townshend’s choices—“Baba O’Riley, “Behind Blue Eyes,” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again.”
“My husband proposed to me while ‘Let My Love Open the Door’ played in the background ❤️,” wrote another, referencing the only Townshend solo song to make his list.
“’Won’t Get Fooled Again’ is the greatest rock song of all time. And an anthem for all time and for our time,” added another.
Although the Who recently retired from touring after wrapping up their “The Song Is Over” farewell tour, Townshend remains busy. He was in New York to promote the opening of Quadrophenia, a Rock Ballet, which is based on the Who’s landmark 1973 album and the 1979 film inspired by it. The rock ballet is now playing at the New York City Center from Friday, Nov. 14 through Nov. 16.
