First Alert Weather: Quiet today, but tracking some unsettled weather this weekend

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Today will be a relatively quiet weather day for the Flower City, with cloud cover moving in this morning and lasting into the afternoon with a slight breeze and highs in the mid to upper 40s. Some sun will poke through for the late afternoon. It gets cold tonight with lows in the upper 20s, but no rain is expected, so no ice on the roads or sidewalks.

Saturday will see overcast conditions and cool temperatures slowly rise ahead of a warm front which will bring widespread rain in the afternoon. The rain will last through the evening, making for sloppy conditions outdoors. Temperatures will peak in the mid 50s during the rainfall. No flooding threat from this rain, so we’ll remain Green on the Threat Tracker. Overnight a cold front passes, which will drop temperatures to the upper 30s/low 40s for Sunday morning.

While winds won’t be too bad Saturday, they will pick up Saturday night as the cold front passes and stay there for the duration of Sunday. Gusts could reach 40 MPH in some spots, namely the higher elevations south of Rochester and along the Lake Ontario shoreline. We’re closely tracking these wind trends, and may issue a Yellow Alert if it looks like they’ll get stronger. Stay tuned for updates on that. Other than the wind, we’ll have some lake effect mixed showers southeast of the lake, which will develop into snow showers as temperatures continue to drop behind the front as we head into the afternoon and evening. If you’re headed to the Bills game for the 1pm game, expect it to be windy with chances for those mixed showers… Football weather!

Ground temperatures will be marginally above freezing for most of Sunday, so not looking at much if any snow accumulation during the day from any passing snow showers. However, temperatures fall to or below freezing overnight which will allow some snow to stick to the ground. This cold air continues into Monday morning, and with lake effect snow showers still ongoing we may see some snow on the roads. It’s too early to tell how much snow may fall from these lake snow showers, so stay tuned for locations and amounts.
