Styx Legend Dennis DeYoung Blasts ‘Shameful’ Rock Hall

Dennis DeYoung just went off on the Rock Hall.  The founder of ‘70s supergroup Styx shared a lengthy message to Facebook days after the 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in November 2025.

While he acknowledged that a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame “would sure be nice,” DeYoung called out the organization for waiting too long to induct worthy musicians.

“It’s a shame that Bad Company had to wait so long to get in that it rendered Paul Rodgers unable to perform due to health concerns,” DeYoung, 78, wrote. “Bollocks!! I would have liked to have seen him perform years ago to demonstrate how one of rock’s premiere singers ACTUALLY ROCKS."

“The induction ceremony clearly pointed out the tragic manner in which this joint operates,” the “Come Sail Away” singer added. “Making so many musicians wait until they either incapacitated or dead is shameful. Joe Cocker, Warren Zevon et al are suddenly eligible decades after their success? Explain what’s changed except the Hall’s inability to let go of their clear prejudices and induct them?”

DeYoung also called for the Rock Hall to change their “damn name.” “The Hall’s initial mission statement about who qualifies was always a ruse and a joke concocted to protect their own personal choices,” he wrote. “ I’ll stop now before I need BP meds. I have said this before — as someone whose band has never been considered, whatever I write ends up sounding like sour grapes.”

DeYoung, who was a founding member, main songwriter, and primary lead vocalist of Styx from 1972 to 1999, has long made his issues with the Rock Hall known.

In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, he said he felt his band deserved to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “I’m sickened by the fact that we’re not,” he said. “I don’t want to die first.”

The legendary musician has also taken issue with the organization’s name. In 2022, he posted to Facebook to praise Dolly Parton when she withdrew her name from Rock and Roll Hall of Fame consideration because she didn't think her work as a country artist fit the bill.

"Bless you, Dolly Parton,” DeYoung wrote at the time. “I have written this repeatedly, but here goes yet again: Change the name of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to the Contemporary Music Hall of Fame and most of the criticism will subside. No, not all, but most and then you can include Dolly. Or whoever you like.”

“Remember every time you take up space with an inductee that has NO business being included (talented that they may be) you rob those like: Foreigner, Jethro Tull, Pat Benatar, Soundgarden, Uncle Ted, Rage Against the Machine, Bad Company, Supertramp, The Guess Who, ELP, Three Dog Night, etc,” he added.

Bad Company finally got its Rock Hall status in 2025,  but as DeYoung pointed out, it was late in the game for the iconic band. Founding guitarist Mick Ralphs died five months before the band’s induction ceremony, and lead singer Paul Rodgers was forced to bow out due to ongoing health issues.

In a post to Instagram days before the ceremony, Rodgers, 75, wrote, “My hope was to be at the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame induction ceremony and to perform for the fans, but at this time I have to prioritize my health.”

Only original band member Simon Kirke, 76, was on hand to accept the honor in person.
