GATES, N.Y. — A 33-year-old man was hit and killed by an SUV on Route 390 in Gates after a theft at the Aldi on Spencerport Road, police said.
Gates Police Chief Rob Long said the incident began when officers were called to the Aldi for a report of a man stealing packages of meat. “As the officer turned around to stop the suspect, the suspect ran down the embankment and onto Route 390,” Long said.
The man’s name has not been released, but Long said this was not their first encounter with him.
Officers were given the suspect’s description, noting he was carrying a backpack and headed eastbound toward Lyell Avenue. “We’re still determining how much the value was but it was multiple meat products that were stolen,” Long said.
Despite life-saving aid by police, the man died after being struck by the SUV. Long said officers spotted the suspect near Lyell Avenue and the I-390 bridge shortly after the theft. “At that point, the individual had run down the embankment so that officer is making the judgment to go try to pursue the person on foot,” Long said.
The driver of the SUV was injured, taken to the hospital, and later released.
Long said the suspect is known to police for past issues. “For issues in the past so at that point once we’ve identified him we will notify family members.” Retail theft remains a problem in Gates and throughout Monroe County, Long said.
“In this case, it could be one of those situations where the theft was to support an addiction, it could be many different factors and unfortunately it’s just plagued our community,” Long said.
News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin spoke to the assistant manager at Aldi, who had no comment. The investigation will continue with the involvement of the AG’s office, which is standard protocol.
Long said they plan to release the man’s name tomorrow.
