If there is one thing that immediately jumped off the screen about the 2025-26 Chicago Bulls, it was their chemistry.
A young group lacking that clear No. 1 option, the team fully embraced an equal-opportunity system. They started the year punching teams in the mouth with their tempo and depth. Even in the wake of their four-game losing streak, the Bulls essentially have seven players averaging double-digit points per game. The group’s 67.5 assist percentage also ranks seventh in the NBA, while their 335.7 passes made per game is a league-high.
This group has been a perfect example of how the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts, and several players hammered that point home on a recent episode of The Young Man and the Three. Ayo Dosunmu, Matas Buzelis, and Josh Giddey sat down as a group for a wide-ranging discussion with Tommy Alter. As the three talked about the early portion of the season and their respective journeys to the NBA, the bond they share was obvious.

Whether it be snickering at each other’s answers or raving about each other’s skills, the three Chicago Bulls youngsters provided an enjoyable and insightful hour-long talk.
One of the best moments came when host Tommy Alter asked for each player’s welcome to the NBA moment. All three couldn’t help but laugh through Matas Buzelis’ response, which he said happened during a team film session during his rookie campaign.
“We do a lot with numbers and analytics. One time, I remember driving baseline and I bumped like a Shai-shoulder, and then I separated and I was close to the rim,” Buzelis said. “He backed off because I hit him pretty hard, and I shot a mid-range. The next day it’s on the film, and Billy was like, ‘Matas, take that sh*t and throw it out in the trash.’ I’m like, ‘damn, that’s my shot.’ Everyone is in there. Your heart like drops. Oh dang, I’m not going to shoot that again. That’s the thing with Billy. He’s going to be straight up with you. You have to respect.”
While Ayo Dosunmu and Josh Giddey both clearly had their fun with the story, they were each very quick to have Buzelis’ back. Dosunmu stressed how important that open dialogue is and how good this locker room is at embracing constructive criticism. Giddey also later talked about the tight-knit group he had in Oklahoma City and how he sees similarities between the care this group has for one another.
For what it’s worth, I also walked away from the conversation very impressed with Buzelis’ self-reflection. He spoke at length about what he’s learned in just over a year at the NBA level. More specifically, he was brutally honest about the changes he needed to make after coming out of G League Ignite.
“The player I was at Ignite is way different than I am now. At Ignite I was more trying to finesse, and I wasn’t playing hard. When Billy sat me down last year and say you’re not playing hard, I’m like what do you mean? And he kind of explained it to me and broke it down in certain ways of how I can impact winning and not just score the ball. There are so many things you can do on the basketball court that’s not shooting the basketball. And that was a big thing.”
Anyway, I encourage you to listen to the full episode of The Young Man & The Three on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. The interview really does speak to the organization’s new mindset and the encouraging young talent they have to build around.
