ROCHCESTER, N. Y. – In previous columns, I have discussed how significantly elevation influences our weather. Rochester sits at roughly 500 feet above sea level. Travel south to Bristol Mountain, and the elevation rises to about 2,000 feet, which is a considerable increase. This higher elevation can lead to dramatically different weather conditions, particularly during the winter months.
Now, let’s really crank up the elevation and head about 325 miles east of Rochester to Mount Washington, New Hampshire, which stands at 6,288 feet. Mount Washington was once famously known as having “the worst weather in the world” — and for good reason. Positioned along one of the major storm tracks in the Northeast, the mountain is a natural target for extreme weather events.
Temperature measurements on Mount Washington date back more than 200 years, although the instruments used today are, thankfully, much more advanced. Modern sensors monitor temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure along with more specialized data, such as ice accumulation rates and electromagnetic discharges. These latter measurements are crucial, as ice can form rapidly in the mountain’s harsh environment, and lightning strikes are a frequent hazard.
While the summit is open to visitors only during the summer months, meteorologists are stationed there year-round to study and endure its fierce conditions. Strong winds are a constant challenge as gusts exceeding 100 miles per hour are not uncommon. In fact, Mount Washington once held the world record for the highest wind speed ever measured. An incredible 231 miles per hour which was the strongest ever recorded outside of a major hurricane at the time.
