Actor Stellan Skarsgård has a long and impressive filmography, while his TV credits are much shorter in comparison. The Marvel actor reveals that he's purposely avoided TV roles, calling it "poor man's storytelling," and why he made an exception for Andor.
Looking at his TV credits, Skarsgård has appeared in various TV films and as guest characters on shows like River, Chernobyl, and Entourage. His longest TV role to date is the Disney+ Star Wars series Andor.
He played the role of the main character Luthen Rael since the series' inception in 2022 and has starred in 18 episodes so far. Skarsgård gets brutally honest about why TV isn't his forte and has fans taking sides.
"I made an exception for Andor because that wasn’t traditional television," said the actor to The Film Stage.
"Normal television writing is: everything is in the text, everything is explained. So it doesn’t matter who plays it or who directs it; people will understand it even while they’re doing the wash or cleaning the kitchen. It’s poor man’s storytelling, easy and cheap. I get depressed when I watch it," he added.
Many fans agreed that Andor is exemplary storytelling and considered one of the best in the sci-fi genre. One fan on X explained that the Star Wars series appealed to multiple fans from theater, plays, cinema, and more.
Others couldn't help but disagree and be stunned by the actor's reasoning.
"Is he for real? You never watch some real freaking good Max TV show or Apple TV shows. That's not limiting it can actually broaden and develop characters if done right. A movie you have one hours and change to develop and not enough time to get to know them," said one fan on X.
Another commented, "Stellan is an excellent actor whose work I respect a lot but I recommend he try watching more TV, since a lot of it over the last 20 years has done a better job of doing everything he says than most of the movies he's been in..."
Some pointed out how Skarsgård's sons have gained popularity from TV roles like True Blood, Big Little Lies, Murderbot, Clark, Hemlock Grove, It: Welcome to Derry, Vikings, Cursed, and Evil.
