Dancing With the Stars fans think Tom Bergeron was in the right when he made a recent comment about the show’s most controversial winner, Bobby Bones.
During an exclusive interview with Parade, the former Dancing With the Stars host was asked to recall a result on the show that shocked him the most. Bergeron admitted that Bones’ win in Season 27 was a big “ouch” for the ABC celebrity ballroom competition.
Bones, who won the mirrorball trophy with pro dancer Sharna Burgess after audience votes outranked judges' scores, replied to Bergeron’s comment via a TikTok on Nov. 12. “This was hurtful,” he said. “And not because of what was said, but really who said it.”
It wasn’t long before Bergeron apologized to Bones in a message he shared on his Instagram page. The veteran TV host explained that his “ouch” was based on his feelings that Bones’ win “spoke to a need to address the balance between judge and viewer voting.”
“I was doing so many interviews leading up to the [DWTS 20th anniversary], I was bound to say something inelegantly,” Bergeron captioned the post. “Sorry, Bobby. Sometimes I should fall back on my mime training,” he added.

“You only spoke the truth and facts!” one fan wrote in the comment section.
“Tom. You spoke on something that everyone has been talking about,” another agreed.
“You spoke honestly (it WAS a shocking win), and have always been a class act,” a third chimed in.
“This is why you were always THE BEST TOM! You care about the integrity of the show and how popularity relates to dancing talent,” added another.
“I commend you for apologizing because you felt like you needed to; however, I don’t think you said anything wrong,” another fan told Bergeron. “There’s a reason his win was controversial. …at the end of the day, I think deep down he knows he was not the best of that season, and that’s the only reason why he really wanted is because he had millions of daily radio listeners voting for him.”
After Bones won DWTS in 2018, producers implemented a Judges' Save rule that allowed judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, and Bruno Tonioli to “save” one of the bottom two couples from elimination, thus taking the power away from viewers.
Just ahead of Season 28, Inaba told Entertainment Tonight the change was made in response to backlash over Bones’ win. “We have made some adjustments to the judging, because we got a lot of complaints," Inaba said at the time. “We listened to what everybody said about what happened last year."
The Judges’ Save was dropped in Season 32, but Bergeron recently gave one other suggestion that could impact Dancing with the Stars eliminations.
“It’s time to bring back the results show,” he told the Hollywood Reporter in reference to DWTS’ past two-night slot on ABC's primetime schedule. “I thought it made the voting more fair across the country, because the West Coast can’t vote now unless they’re watching on wherever the hell you’d watch it streamed live.”
