The ongoing debate over a Bitcoin mining facility in the Finger Lakes has entered the realm of state politics. New York Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado has voiced his opposition to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s decision to allow Greenidge Generation to continue operations on Seneca Lake.
Greenidge recently reached an agreement with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to obtain an air permit, contingent on reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. However, environmental advocates argue that the cryptomining facility is damaging the environment and the health of nearby communities.
“Families in the Finger Lakes are paying the price — tourism, wineries, farms, all depend on clean air and clean water,” Delgado said. “And when a corporate polluter gets special treatment, everyone else is left to shoulder the cost. Leadership means having the courage to say no to powerful interests and yes to the people you serve.”
The DEC stated that the new agreement would impose permit conditions on Greenidge to protect the community and align the facility’s emissions with the Climate Act.
Delgado is challenging Hochul in the upcoming primary race for governor.
